Now I'm wondering if I did the right thing!

I sent my 9 year old son to school this morning even though he has a swollen/bruised eye.
His teacher just called me!!!! She asked him what happened and he told her he didn't want to talk about it lol My poor boy is so embarrassed about the way he looks, I should have kept him home maybe? sad UGH

thanks! He said it didn't hurt, so I didn't give him any painkillers, but when I told him he would get a black eye he cried because he didn't know what that meant and truthfully it sounds terrible! I explained it would be swollen and bruised and would get darker before it started to get better again.

Poor baby...pat

If that had happened here they would have called Child Welfare Services first and then called you. Especially since he said he didn't want to talk about it.

True story...when my daughter was not even two she got the chicken pox. Even though we put socks on her hands to keep her from scratching, she bit them off and scratched so hard her "bumps" got infected with impetigo. They left small circular scars on her stomach. When she was 4 I had to take her to the ER because she fell on her skates and cut her knee. Some nurse called Child Protective Services and told them the scars she saw on my daughter's stomach were cigarette burns. They came to my HOME and demanded to see the records from the hospital I'd taken her to for the chicken pox.

America's child abuse problem is an epidemic I know and I guess some social workers have to be over-zealous.

disbelief
that's crazy!!!

his teacher wanted to know if it had happened yesterday or if I even knew about it, since it looked quite fresh (as she put it) and it could have happened after arriving at school, in which case she would have sent him to sickbay. I told her if he says it hurts or if he seems upset about it I would come and collect him from school, she said she would do that.

not once but TWICE last year my wife had to send a note along with our youngest daughter: "please excuse Melanie's appearance today...". The girl is just a magnet for grass stains, scraped knees and the occasional black eye. And her best friends are all boys. Luckily she's quite girly at home lol

I remember there was this one guy that got punched out. He had a pretty good mark on his cheek where someone clocked him.

But he told everyone he choked on a pretzel, lost consciousness because he could not breathe, and then passed out, fell, hit his head (not his throat, where the pretzel was) on the coffee table, which dislodged the pretzel and saved his life but didn't wake him up, and he was finally revived by his dog.

And almost everyone bought his story!

Dayum! omg but then you have to weigh it with all the kids who are truly abused but don't get that level of attention and concern from CPS. confused

it's a tough call for teachers

I think if class sizes were smaller, teachers would get to know their students well over the course of the year and other signs too would alert them to trouble at home. Our teachers are obliged to report to human services, and I know that yesterday's incident has been noted in to my son's diary.

It's looking good today nod hug

He has collided with another child at school (same eye) and his brother threw a stick at him and he had to have stitches on the eyebrow of that same eye before. All this has contributed to him getting quite a pronounced blinking tic confused
