I do exactly as I please and not by any society's standards. I think for myself and do not let the media influence my opinions. You, on the other hand, seem to believe everything mainstream media tells you to believe about us. Your nationality is important because I tend to dismiss what people in other countries have to say about racism in this country. it is too bad that you do not want to know or claim the history of your ancestors. I do. I want to know and understand why some white people in my country hate me because of the color of my skin. Keep those rose colored glasses on, tho.

I subscribe to CMJ music. Last one was like 30 pages with no cd. Magazine are over. I also noticed it will cost like $300+ to resubscribe to CMJ but that will include passes to events. Not worth it for me too far away.

I hang out with a professional journalist, I think his days are numbered doing that for a living.

Again, you're really not paying any attention. Are you just trolling? lol

Magazines don't have to say "nigger" to print an article that is detrimental to black people. They simply have to spin. And spin works, it gets political involvement, and creates change--not always for the better.

If you think your rights are protected and will always be there, you're wrong. Your rights walk on a razor thin line, and constantly have to be upheld. It only takes a few focus groups and money to threaten to ban abortion and turn women who seek them into 'evil, greedy, criminals'. Women's reproductive rights in America hang on one hope--Barack Obama is a liberal.

I do recommend that you study up on spin and on minority struggles though. Your idealistic streak will last another 10 years, in which case you'll take two paths--you'll become a social conservative and say insane things, or you'll understand what Ivy and the rest of the ladies here have been trying to tell you isn't just crazy talk.

the whole minority struggles thing is a steryotype too

it doesnt have to be protected by law, its protected by masses, the complaints that come flooding in when someone starts saying something a little bit racial
and i dont thinnk abortion is a reproductive right either, its a self inflicted ''privelage'' seeing as it would be biologically wrong to kill something thats supposed to happen when people have sex

im not blinded, ive actually asked numerous times why we need a segregated magazine, and why i need to know more about serena williams excersizing or whatever, more than lets say carmen electra's
no one has explained it,some here just keep dancing around and insulting me

THAT answers more than enough questions

okay, I generally don't feed the trolls...

but you are very misinformed about Ebony magazine. It is not a "segregated" magazine. Segregated would mean that only Black people could be in magazine or on the front cover. Now I am lumping Ebony and Jet magazine together since they are produced by same publishing company, but both have had White epople on the cover.

You see, the magazines are targeted toward the interest of Black people. That is the TARGETED demographics. Just like golf magazines are targetedd toward golf enthusiasts. If there is someone White who is really of interest to a conscensus of Black Americans, then they will appear in the magazine too in the context that will be of interest of the targeted readers... Black Americans.

So that is the reason that Nicole Brown Simpson, (that's right THAT Nicole) was on the cover of the magazine... because she was the wife of a famed Black athelete, OJ Simpson, and the reason that Jennifer Lopez has appeared on/in the magazines because she was an RB artist, on Living Color tv show and dating P Diddy, or Kimora Lee (who althought she says she is Black... she looks very Asian to me) and Teena Marie who is white but... (enuff said, everyone knows why the Vanilla Child is in Black publications talk to the hand)

You see, it is not that Whites are prohibited, but are not of interest to the mass of Black readers and if for some reason someone wanted to read about Reba McIntyre's new CD and career... there are SO MANY other magazines that can be a source. When was the last time Eryka Badu or Maxwell was on the cover of Redbook or McCall's?

talk to the hand

Lisa Marie Presley made the cover of Ebony AND Jet too

Because you're making a judgment about a culture that you know little to nothing about, let alone the fact that you are not a member of it. You admitted yourself that you are a 19 year old British citizen, so by that standard alone, you have no grounds to judge American culture in general or African American culture in particular. Since you are unaware of the history of African people and their descendants in America, you're probably unaware that white people systematically marginalized, belittled, and humiliated black people in this country through slavery and Jim Crow laws, and that said black people were often characterized as "savages" who had no redeeming value except for their labor. Even after fighting a civil war, going through the civil rights movement to guarantee rights to African Americans that were supposed to have been enforced over 100 years earlier, and electing an African American to the Presidency, we're still dealing with white people (mostly from the southern parts of USA) attempting to belittle the accomplishments of African Americans.
Because you are not from the USA, you don't have that cultural mindset which pervades race relations in this country.

Zinzi said:
culture is a made up thing that you believe black people should live by. nobody is born in a kimono, playing a banjo, or wearing a bone through their nose
history that is not relevant to set person but what the great great grandparents went through should not be spoken of as if it is part of the set persons Self history
and financially is just where you live

Now that's just ignorance on your part. Unless you somehow managed to raise yourself after exiting your mother's womb, every person is a sum of their family and community's heritage. Just because you weren't enslaved by whites or fought against the Scots or Irish doesn't mean that you don't have that cultural history ingrained in you in some fashion. You said that you're only 19; so you probably are too young to remember when your parents had to dodge random terrorist bombimgs by the Irish Republican Army or the history behind the rise of the Irish Republican Army in the first place. Now hopefully, your culture has evolved considerably since then, but don't claim that your parents or grandparents history doesn't affect you you are today. no no no!
