I'm curious, all: To what other black periodicals do you subscribe? To which have you subscribed in the past? Which are/were great? Which suck(ed)? Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Emerge, Black Enterprise, Code and Ebony Man (though, on that last one, I don't think I subscribed). I occasionally picked up "Honey" because it was co-helmed by someone I knew and -- even though I wasn't in the target demographic -- I wanted to throw her some support. They seemed like they were shooting for a hipper Essence deal without sacrificing depth or sophistication. Code didn't last long enough for me to get a true sense of its market or, rather, how it would find a way to connect with that market long-term. Ebony Man was so-so. They found the midpoint between traditional Ebony-caliber articles and the crop of black men's magazines that have been around for the past decade or so (that I never read). Emerge was wonderful. And, I found Black Enterprise to be only so-so. I read so much online now every day, I no longer subscribe to print products. Not worth the expense. I know this contributes to -- if not hastens -- the demise of my former love, the print news media. But, alas, someone said "parties weren't meant to last..."

I never liked Jet. Too small and almost tabloid with it's "people talking" column... and Star does the tabloids...so much better. Anyhoo. I am supporting Ebony because I really like seeing beautiful Black people on the magazine covers who LOOK black, wearing hair and make up that accentuate their beautiful ethnicity. I like seeing women wearing lipstick with colors like "Raisin" and "Blackberry"... not "Iced Peach" and "Perfectly Tanned." This along with ariticles about Black families, Black music groups helped me feel a sense of belonging in America. I did not identify with a family outing to a baseball game or going to a hoedown or square dancing... As a Black girl, I identified with driving down south for family reunions, and back yard barbeques and house parties. To read strategies for families doing THOSE activities were more relevant to me. Now internet takes up more of my time so that I don't read many magazines... but if I decided to pick up a copy to find out the latest on Ericka Badu or yes even Prince... I know that I will get an interesting article and GREAT PICTURES in Ebony or Essence magazine. You got to support them or all we will have left is a tiny one column story in People (very seldom a cover story unless there is a scandal to captialize on), or those crappy (can't spell or write a grammatically correct sentence) hip hop "magazine". [Edited 8/21/09 18:40pm] This is one of my fave Ebony covers.

Trolls who play genuinely-yet-provocatively naive invariably and fairly successfully play the role of the schoolkid who throws the first punch. Again, not saying Zinc or whatever our Org friend is named is a troll. I'm just saying again that it's not worth it. Entertainment takes a lot of different forms on the Org. Especially for tro . . . I used to have subscriptions to Ebony, Essence and Vibe back in the '90s. I still love Eseence but Vibe got old pretty quick and I stopped my subscription after Biggie died.

I know this contributes to -- if not hastens -- the demise of my former love, the print news media. But, alas, someone said "parties weren't meant to last..." Of the ones you mentioned, I only ever subscribed to Emerge. Code caught my attention, but as you say, it bit the dust before it truly found itself. Sad to say, but no other national rags really spoke/speak to me... I'm probably a buppie, but with enough boho sensibilities that Black Enterprise seems a foreign world to me. Unfortunately, there was so little buzz around Ebony Man that it never really picked up on my radar. And I'd just as soon see the likes of King and XXL die a It always surprised me, but I was often impressed with the quality and cheekiness of Vibe's editorial. (And to some degree, I could even begrudgingly say the same now of Source.) My pop culture tastes, though, never quite matched up with either target demo. Honestly, my favorite black periodical out now is Essence. ...And yeah, it's lonely out there. [Edited 8/22/09 9:21am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Suede was intriguing. Sad that it spiraled into Limbo. I'd love to see it pick up again... and I'd LOVE some male approximation to spring up. [Edited 8/22/09 9:18am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
