Harlepolis said: By some accounts, Johnson Publishing is in crisis mode, with its print advertising revenue down three consecutive years and getting worse because of the recession and the wholesale shifting of advertising dollars to the Internet. This year alone, Ebony’s advertising revenue has dropped 31.8 percent, according to the Publishers Reference Bureau. And the worst may not be over, as many marketers continue shifting dollars away from black media and focusing on the faster growing Hispanic audience. The situation is so serious that Johnson Publishing has been forced to make a series of staff layoffs totaling some 150 people, according to published reports.
From: http://www.blackweb20.com...-for-help/ Even though I stopped reading Ebony/Jet 5 years ago since none of their stuff seems relevant to me,,,,,I still hate to see such an institution go to waste, and I'm MORE upset that alot of people will lose their jobs. What do you guys think? i dont like magazines like this anyway, why do they have to have a magazine for black people anyway pfft ''now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, a fanatical criminal''

Morons. and whats the history, keep america segregated? Guess what? America will STAY segregated & divided whether Ebony stays on business or get flushed down the toilet, it was founded on that fact and it will keep being that way,,,,,much to alot of people's displeasure, don't think its supposed to end just because a black man happens to be the president. And its not even about segregation,,,its about black OWNERSHIP!! OWNERSHIP is what's at stake when you separate the wheat from the shaft. Most black people in this country are not connected to owning anything....if that job/career ends, thats it.

Wow, I have subscribed not to them for years... but I will get subscription tomorrow for Ebony.
I never liked Jet. Too small and almost tabloid with it's "people talking" column... and Star does the tabloids...so much better. Anyhoo. I am supporting Ebony because I really like seeing beautiful Black people on the magazine covers who LOOK black, wearing hair and make up that accentuate their beautiful ethnicity. I like seeing women wearing lipstick with colors like "Raisin" and "Blackberry"... not "Iced Peach" and "Perfectly Tanned." This along with ariticles about Black families, Black music groups helped me feel a sense of belonging in America. I did not identify with a family outing to a baseball game or going to a hoedown or square dancing... As a Black girl, I identified with driving down south for family reunions, and back yard barbeques and house parties. To read strategies for families doing THOSE activities were more relevant to me. Now internet takes up more of my time so that I don't read many magazines... but if I decided to pick up a copy to find out the latest on Ericka Badu or yes even Prince... I know that I will get an interesting article and GREAT PICTURES in Ebony or Essence magazine. You got to support them or all we will have left is a tiny one column story in People (very seldom a cover story unless there is a scandal to captialize on), or those crappy (can't spell or write a grammatically correct sentence) hip hop "magazine". Honestly, folks, let's not get bent out of shape by the comments of someone who simply said they don't see the need for black-geared publications.
They, in all fairness, probably don't see the need for golfing, NASCAR, cooking, religious or financial publications either. I mean, because let's face it: Niche publications must be inherently skewed. It's probably worth considering that perspective some. OK, and in the case of anyone who might be trolling (not saying said poster is), don't demean yourself by reacting. It's not worth it.

If there was no Jet or Ebony especially on the heels of racial disparity at it's highest in the 60's,the black community wouldn't have been informed about things that affect it's culture or this country. Let me break it down for you. There was a time when magazines like People weren't putting blacks on the cover or Time and U.S News weren't talking about issues in the black community. What the hell was Ebony and Jet thinking when they decided to put out a magazine about news affecting the black community? Maybe they should have consulted with the editor of People magazine first to see if they had the same idea. Don't laugh at my funk

If you want to debate that point, you probably should start a thread in the Politics & Religion forum. The original post, however, quotes an article that talks about how pressures on the print media industry are making Johnson Publishing's shift to online products even more urgent and have caused layoffs (a trend seen in non-ethnic media, particularly in daily newspapers). Do you find that you read more online publications than printed ones? If you read print publications, which ones do you favor? Given your profile details (UK, 19-year-old female), I'm sure media companies are targeting your demographic pretty heavily as a consumer.
