Laser eye surgery RESULTS! Has anyone here had it done? How did it go?
I have a consultation in a couple of days, so hoping to get it done pretty soon. [Edited 8/14/09 5:32am]

I looked into it at one point, then decided not to do it after the optometrist told me that correcting my distance vision would cause me to lose my uncorrected near vision. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

A friend of mine has had his eyes laser corrected - he worked in India for a while so had it done there as it was cheaper.
As far as I'm aware, no complaints. . [Edited 8/2/09 9:10am]

I'll definitely be asking about this when I have my consultation.

I had it about 15 years ago (when I was 35). The doc undercorrected one eye so that I wouldn't need bifocals when I hit 40.
I'm 50, still don't need bifocals, still have 20/20 vision, and I will tell you that having lasic was the greatest thing I've ever done for myself.

Everyone is not a candidate. I have EXTREME astigmatism and even if I got Lasik I'd still have to wear corrective lenses.

I was thinking about getting it, but I am afraid if it might not work that I could not wear contacts anymore. So I decided to not do it. My ex-bf is thinking of having it done. I am not sure, but doesn't it make more sense to get it done at a young age? He is in his late 30s. It all depends on the type of treatment you have. For the company i'm using, prices are from £395 per eye ($650 US). The treatment i'll be having - if i'm ok to have it done - is around £900 per eye. I currently pay around £30 per month for contact lenses, so it'll be so worth it in the long run.

From what i've been told, as long as your prescription has been the same for a while they'll do it. What they don't want is to correct your vision only to have it deteriorate even more. They won't perform it on anyone under 20.

I dunno if I would ever do that.
I'm wary of it. I think anyone considering it should do their homework and the pros and cons of it. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! REAL MUSIC by REAL MUSICIANS - Prince "I kind of wish there was a reason for Prince to make the site crash more" ~~ Ben |

So i've just had my consultation to see if i'm suited....
The good news is that i'm okay to have the surgery but I have very poor sight and very thin corneas so this means I would have to have the most costly type of surgery - about twice as much as I initially thought. What a bummer! I still want to get it done though and i'm pencilled in to get it done next week. .....nervous and excited!

I had this done 4 yrs ago, after wearing glasses since I was 6. I have to say it's the best thing I could have ever done! My vision was corrected and I now have 20/16 vision..better then 20/20! This is quite a big deal for me, since my vision was so bad, that I couldn't even wear contacts.
Good luck to you! Proud Memaw to Seyhan Olivia Christine ,Zoey Cirilo Jaylee & Ellie Abigail Lillian

Good luck to you! Wow, that's great to hear! What was your prescription before you had surgery? Sorry I really don't know...I had severe astigmatism in both eyes, which was one of the reasons I couldn't wear contacts. My eyes were so bad, I had to have two surgeries done on my eyes to get them to the point they are at now. Which I knew when I signed up for laser eye surgery. It was an amazing feeling to finally wake up in the mornings and see the alarm clock without have to squish my eyes together. I don't think that I am a good candidate either but I am wondering if I had it done and still needed glasses wouldn't those lenses be thinner and more likely to give me 20/20 vision when I am older? My point is that I don't want to be legally blind as I get older like my uncles did. This astigmatism stuff runs in my family and we have it BAD!!!!

Yes, your lenses would be at a lower power after the surgery. One of the things several doctors told me, over the last 15 years that I've been trying to get this done, is that your eyes change as you age. Therefore, the concern is that if you have Lasik that when your eyes change later you'll be even worse off than if you hadn't had it done. That was enough for me to live with my glasses and contacts than to risk my sight.

The Dr. recently told me that he didn't recommend it simply because of the chance of complications. This was a first, as I had always been told I should do it.
However, a friend had also told me this as well, he is an eye Dr. Same reason, the chance of a complication (and they do happen) was not worth it in his opinion. My Dr. also told me that soon there will be semi-permanent contact lenses, and that that would be the way to go. Or, if you can wait until you get cataracts like my father, they will put fresh lenses in your eyes and you won't need glasses anymore. My Legacy

I'm not sure of the severity though.

So I had the surgery done yesterday. I was going to have Lasic surgery - which has a really quick recovery time, but the surgeon wan't happy to go ahead with it, so I ended up with epi-lasic. It basically meants i'll take longer to heal.
I can see really well - it's amazing!!! My sight is a bit cluody though at the moment. I have a big bag of drops and pills to get me through the next few days. I should feel much better in another day or two and completely back to normal within a week. The sleeping pills they gave me are fab - I can see how people get addicted to them
