It has been established that Mr.Speilberg knows nothing about "black life" outside of hollywood many times, but you're right it needs to be mentioned.

It's so easy to paint in broad strokes when you're rendering someone else. Like I eluded to before...if black men have a problem with how society views them then they need to change those images by changing the men who embody those images not silencing the women who've suffered at the hands of such men.
Silence? Quite the contrary. I think the interest is in having these women sing all the more. Some of us would simply like hearing the entire song. [Edited 8/19/09 23:53pm] Do not patronize me by giving me a shallow "evil vs good" storyline. Show me how those villains are conflicted, is "being evil" the only side of them or are they just another complex human beings who got victimized themselves too? Don't expect me to go "Amen" just because I'm watching a movie about women's empowering. I need to be challanged, not handed with a cliche slogan that will supposedly uplift me. Um so whose fault is that? Alice Walker's? I'm sorry but men (not any race in particular) have been empowering themselves at the expense of women since time began. That book told a woman's story and her story be it a fictional account of many facts from many women or an auto biography of Walker's grandmother deserves to be told.
My concern in this discuession is the BLACK male specifically. I did not say it was Alice Walker's fault, I'm saying that the society did that and her book ain't helping to paint a stable picture about black men. Just like Spike Lee is known for objectifying black women in his movies. You understand what I'm trying to say? Somebody gotta break the damn cycle. Enough of this "black women Vs black man" shit. There's NO empowering coming from that, and I'm a black woman. [Edited 8/20/09 5:22am]

Look, I don't care about Oprah and whom she fancies. But I do know that Rosie O'Donnell talking about how she had a huge crush on Tom Cruise proved that sometimes the lady doth truly protest too much... OK? OK. Her Tommy Boy!!! That ain't no different than Ellen going on and on and on about Timberlake. Ain't nothing against ladies that love the ladies having a boy crush.

Even Alice Walker commented about how biased the direction of the movie went(surprise surprise). Hell, Stephen HIMSELF admitted in a "60 minutes" interview that he's clueless about the subject.

There's NO empowering coming from that, and I'm a black woman. [Edited 8/20/09 5:22am] First off, I'm not the one patronizing you and I'm not talking about any evil vs. good storyline. I would in no way reduce the movie Color Purple to such a simplistic term and I don't see any "cliches" in that film at all. And let me ask you? Did the movie "burning bed" with Farrah Fawcett as a victim of domestic violence and dehuminization at the hands of her white husband somehow set white men back or portray them all as negative? Are you equally dissappointed in that film? Second...I don't expect you to go "Amen" to anything nor do I expect you to give black men a "pass" just because they are black men. Black men are part of society so in fact, they contribute to the negative imagery themselves. And nope, I don't think Spike objectifies black women in his movies. I actually think black women in his movies are largely devoid of character which is hardly the same as objectifying IMO. As far as the black men vs. black woman cycle. Again, nobody can end that cycle but black men and black women and from what I see, black women are doing most of the damn work and they get rewarded with absentee fathers, no committment of marriage from black men, continued objectification in popular music made by black men and so on and so forth. And none of that, absolutely none, has to do with the film Color Purple. I'm sorry but some black men were treating their women like trash long before that book ever came along and they will do it long after. My continued point is....this film in no way contributes to or embodifies negative black male imagery nor how black men are viewed by society at large. Black men control their own imagery by the accomplishments they make and their contributions be they negative or positive. And...many a white woman has her own "color puple" story to tell. Celie's character IMO transcended race because so many poor women in the deep south during that time were not being treated as they should be by men...like human beings that mattered. Yep I can agree with that statement to a certain extent. For instance, I have a problem with the black women, or any woman for that matter, who is down with showing T&A all up in the video and tryna get in back stage but then gets mad at the brotha for tryna hit it then quit it. I mean you can't really blame him for tryna test drive a car that's got the doors all open and the keys already in the ignition. Making better choices will definitely yield better results when it comes to relationships overall.
