What do you do for a living? I'm currently in the midst of working my way through college, and I have yet to declare a major. I'm always hoping for some random, cool idea for a career to materialize before me and inspire at least something general that I could work towards.
Right now I have a job as a satellite technician, but I surely don't want to do this forever (its not very honest nor fulfilling work). So be my inspiration! What do you do? What's it like?

Look @ your classes - what to you tend to gravitate toward? Major in something that naturally interests you, there are all kinds of careers people aren't even aware of. Just follow where the course-load is taking you already & you'll probably be alright.

If you enjoy talking to people be sure your job involves interaction w/ people- some engineering, computer programming, research (medical/lab) and even accounting can become very boring if you feel the need to talk to others throughout the day.
On the other hand, if you prefer to work alone, and have little interaction w/ the public/people in general, you may consider these types of fields. I have done reporting- which involved a nice variety of outside stimulus, interviewing of a variety of people/human interaction- but also alone time- the time where I actually wrote my articles. I left journalism since it paid crap and is a dying market, and am now a banker- what a decision, right (with all the bank layoffs, though I have been lucky enough to work for a strong bank that has had no layoffs, or financial issues). I spend the majority of my day talking to clients, profiling and getting them into the right products and I love it. I also spend about 1-2 hours a day with maintenance type stuff on the computer, so it is a nice variety. Decide if you want to deal w/ people most or all of the day, if you want to educate, solve, or help people, or work more independently or even alone. I hope this helps.

I have actually considered being an interviewer for a magazine or such. I do tend to gravitate towards the language arts- I don't always enjoy it, but I do have some skill in writing and public speaking.

When I first went to college, I thought I would go into magazine business- then I found out, unless you know or are someone special, you will begin at the very bottom as an assistant- at least at most magazines; and definetly at the ones that I wanted to work for (Vogue, Self). I know it's possible to get writing gigs at specialized/custom magazines- but beware as these jobs are scarce.
I did have a solid interview at a custom magazine co. out of Boston, didn't pan out in the end, but would have started at about 33,000-36,000 in city that one needs to average about 50,000 minimum to get by (by my standards, that is and that would be w/ a roommate). Best bet is to intern as much as possible to get your foot in the door at several different places you think you might want to work & make your impression while there. Go above and beyond and be willing to stay late and offer to help w/ anything- make yourself a sponge and show flexibility. Ask those you meet through internships what type of advancement opportunities there are. The reality is you want to do what is enjoyable but you also need to make a living. You don't want to feel like you have no personal life, or that you work for nothing, so don't be embarrassed to ask those in the fields you are considering how happy they are in their positions, what path they recommend, and what suggestions they might have. Good luck to you!

Torah: Good luck on finding the life work that fuels you and pays those bills nicely. My advice is find something you are passionate about and then lean that way... I started a non-profit after seeing a need in our community for abandoned, neglected and abused young ppl. We work with the whole person, mind-body-soul, and help them to break the cycles of abuse and go on to lead productive and purposeful lives. Additionally, we work globally in the rescue and restoration of children involved in sex trafficking. What's it like? Rewarding, fulfilling and very heart wrenching. And get this, my degree? Fine Arts. Haha. Good luck!

Do not major in art history unless you want to be underpaid -- and that's if you can get a museum job! The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
