eek this kind of discrimination would get someone fired in the workplace, so no I don't think they should get used to this.

Free speech in not permissible when it comes to hate speech outlined by civil rights laws. The teacher(s) were not stating opinions they were making comments that were discriminating of his sexual orientation. This was a violation of the child's civil rights. People need to be tolerant as opposed to him being less sensitive. What your saying is bull.

Nevermind the violation of trust by a teacher in the position of power.

Student asks to use the restroom. Polite enough, right?

Teacher uses opportunity to insinuate student is on some George Michael schitt.

In in a minneapolis airport about a year ago a senator from Idaho (Larry Craig) was arrested in a male restroom for soliciting sex. There is a system of toe taps and hand gestures to signal if/what you want. the teacher was implying he wanted to have sex in the bathroom.

I hope the day comes when people stop referring to being Gay as a "choice". It's not more a choice than being Black, White or Hispanic.

The only "choice" we (well some of us) make is to live as we are OPENLY and proudly. (And keep in mind we're talking about a CHILD, so he's not even there yet!)

With all due respect, that's some ignorant bs take on this.

That's like some bigot yellin' racist shit at a minority who just moved into a predominantly white neighborhood and sayin' "Well, they better toughen up if they gonna choose to live here, yuk yuk." It's plain bullshit. Sorry.

I would. I'm not saying being gay is a choice, but if I were given a choice to live life gay or straight, I would choose gay.

Excuse me, but what part of the sentence "harassed a boy because of his perceived sexual orientation..." did you not understand?confused

To begin with, harrassment has no place in a classroom, period. Teachers and instructors are there to teach, and display good citizenship while doing so. To add insult to injury they are publicly attemtping to humilate a child in front of his peers based on their perception of what they believe him to be. Even if he were gay, and openly so, there is no justification for making an example out of that child and attacking him like this. He has done nothing wrong and this behavior has nothing to do with disciplinary action for any school rule broken, or bad behavior demonstrated on his behalf. What these adults are engaging in an abuse of authority with malicious verbal intent towards a child, pure and simple, and they should be removed from the classroom.

I can't believe this shit happens over there, I am nearly at the end of my teacher training here, and it is drilled into us, we can not evn bring up a student's sexuality, which will be interesting as its a pretty intolerant bunch being trained up this year. We have diversity rammed down our throats, yet our classes are still 95% white and straight from religious middle class families, it seems the 'alternative lifestyles' applicants are not joining up like they should be, its sad. I feel like I am a trail blazer being gay and of colour myself. Yet if I had a kid I thought was gay or lesbian in my class, I would not draw attention to it and I would step in if anyone gave him/her grief over it.
The teachers job is to create a safe and engaging learning environment that aims to include and engage all students not marginalise them.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I'm sure every gay/bi/lesbian Orger reading this will have their own school days horror stories... and knowing that it was the TEACHERS omg - not the students even! - doing this... it disgusts me. disbelief

And, yeah, I hate to add to the stereoptype(s) but I remember a few PE/Games teachers being the worst offenders for this type of behaviour. Or... making suggestive comments, is another way of putting it.

I think the worst was when I was trying to tell the vice principal about the comments I was getting and it all came down to "well are you?"

She missed the fucking point, I wasn't even having sex yet but I had to bare the prejudice

Yeah, I remember one conversation with a particular teacher - who was a lovely lady, listened to everything I had to say - but, ultimately, did nothing; probably for fear of reprisals. neutral
