I mean, I've walked out on plenty of movies before, but District 9? mad

Actaully, I walked out on a Wesley Snipes movie called "Passenger 57" or some shit like that once. It was so awful, I ended up walking 2 miles home in the cold rain because I thought I'd be more entertained by the walk than the movie lol

I think the disappoint arises from the fact that it's an intellectual sci-fi film as opposed to a shoot 'em up sci-fi film.
Yes there are weapons involved, eventually . . .but 'Star Wars' it's not.

I wouldn't consider it intellectual... there's nothing too thoughtful about it or should I say new and poignant. all the themes of this flick were more intellectualized in a movie like Schindler's List, which in itself was considered old hat by some since Holocaust movies were already a cliche. And gov't/industrial weapon conpiracy is a cliche ever since Alien did it so well back in 1979. Or helping an alien go home who displays very human emotions (ET 1982 or even Starman 1983) So there's nothing too thoughtful or new... its just intensely in your face with it's humorous nods to extreme graphic effects and its very realistic environment/sets and effects. It's kind of like a Paul Verhovan (spelling?) film but with the cheesiness cleaned away with very realistic style. (think like "Starship Troopers" which is a fairly high concept satire but without the cartoonish look and pacing)

It's is a shoot em up action film. But one that's well put together.

I love it! It's quite emotional actually.

I thought it worked on both levels.

It also made great satire. nod
I did think of ET when the aliens started to appear like the only 'sane' characters in the whole thing.

However, I applaud them for making the aliens so ugly and hard to like. I'm assuming there's going to be a District 10. I just hope it doesn't end up doing to this movie what Matrix 2 and 3 did to the Matrix lol

I haven't seen it yet, but it's on here already excited
it isn't at our mainstram cinema, so I told the master it will be on where they put foreign films, and he said "but it's not subtitled!" and I told him from what I saw on the trailer, every time an alien talks it is!!! falloff

OMG.

It's not nearly as creepy as I thought it was going to be. And thankfully the subtitles are short and easy to read. It's not even distracting once the action gets going because you're so into the scenes by then.

It's definitely the highlight of this year, moviewise....shame on Harry Potter.

I don't think of it as a shoot'em up because it's not about how many aliens people can kill or vice versa.
The aliens aren't more human either.
The humans just act like real people, not movie characters. Meaning they act in their self-interest, are racist, prejudiced, disloyal and everything else you'd expect from people.

WARNING, I do love talking/debating about movies.

I think that the movie WAS about crazy gore / shoot outs / how many splattering- completely destroyed bodies can happen, it seemed structured to climax in showdowns of violence (at least the movie I saw!). the plot of the man getting lost/losing it all and transforming, the aliens needing to go home was kind of the skeleton, but the meat of the movie is the action. It's kind of like if you took Blood Diamond or City of God and made it MORE insane and almost funny. And no one acted like a real person in my impression! It was like a comic graphic novel, where the bad guys/power are all completely evil, and it was a very cartoonish version of prejudice/industry/ghettos/gangs.

I mean you had aliens saying "Fuck" and people able to understand the aliens like how people understand Snoopy in a cartoon.

There is also no way that wife would have settled for what her father was telling her, and no way even that the heroe's welcome home party would continue despite his obvious hurt state when he wanders in...

it was a satire fantasy, and it plays like the elaorate video games like Halo with their cinematic backstories. It's kind of like a Peter Jackson movie like Dead ALive or Meet the Feebles but is disciplined enough to weave a sense of rules and structure in the world it dreams up (hence a very fake reality).

A friend of mine actually complained that the doctor scientists would never all just go ahead and make a decision to kill a man in the name of technology in such a personal manner (in that lab scene), without a hint of rebellion or protest.

I told him it wasn't trying to be realistic, it was scifi fantasy. I mean if it was trying to be real, then they wouldn't have some mile wide ship floating magically due to some fantasy technology when we see that the alien technology is almost exactly like ours, down to computer digital interfaces and "vehicles" running on chemical processes. there were defininite bad guys and a protagonist that went form bad to good (classic fairy tale stuff).

I didn't walk out, but I had a hard time getting into it at first, too. I know they had to set it up and all that, but it seemed to me to take too long to get going. Once it got going, though, it was ok.

This is just me being a puss, but while the guts and gore scenes didn't bug me, the hyperemetic main character did. Good grief, that was the pukingest sumbatch I have ever seen. See something gross, puke. Get shot, puke. Bad news, puke. Get an alien roundhouse kick to the jaw, puke. Then declare hunger and set off for some food and puke some more.

WORSE PIECE OF RACIST TRASH I HAVE EVER SEEN.
I got DRAGGED to watch it. I had 2 expectations of the film:
1. It was gonna be a Will Ferrel-ish satire/parody type film
2. It would end up being like Starship Troopers with humans v.s. aliens...
So much for expectations...
Instead, I watch some BULLSHIT ass movie about ALIENS WHO LAND IN AFRICA, of ALL places on Earth, rounded up into shacks, and then being forcefully evicted out of homes they were put in, tortured, beat up, abused, and killed. Then there are africans fighting the aliens and shit. Who ever came up with the idea for that piece of trash must be EATING crack. It was like fucking King Kong 2009. I mean, really? :disgust:

It was really, really good.

Once again a movie where the it seemed most people in the theatre were lost and didn't really get what was being said or the satire.

I'm now convinced that 98% of the earth's population is completely daft.

real decent flick. i wasn't really feeling the end. it was a bit too abrupt and transformer-ish lurking, but the whole buildup and 90% of it as a whole was awesomeness headbang. loved it! popcorn

You missed so much in the movie.
But the scenes you mention could be offensive to the point of distraction.
Did you notice how natural it seemed to man to exploit the 'other?'
And is this a message for South Africa? A warning about how weaker minorities are perceived and treated?
Notice how easy it was for even Black South Africans to sanction the same abuses that were just a cavalierly imposed on them.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.
