Looks like the child was being stubborn or something. If you have to put a child on a leash to keep the child under control something is wrong.

Unless there's more footage, clearer footage or more information available elsewhere, I'd be less inclined to judge. God knows what's going on in that blurry, seconds-long footage.

I completely agree.

I've known a child or two that are downright zipped.
And sometimes out of control kids grow to be out of control teens/adults.
I know this, my cousin is a prime example and now she's on an actual restraining order from her own mother.

No way I'm judging that footage without more info.
[Edited 8/13/09 16:27pm]

NO adult should ever drag any child like that for any reason, if the child is out of control, you as an adult must not lose control. The adult should behave smarter than the child, not go tat for tat and stay angry. When you are a lowsy parent, you do crap like this. I have kids and my kids never do this, why, because I am consistent with my behavior, and I remove the child from the situation and just take the child home before I get to this point.

Its not how the child acts, its how the adult reacts to bad behavior. All these little bad ass kids around me do not mess with me, they behave. Kids know who to do this to. wink

I'm sure you're an awesome mom. But those tactics don't work with every kid.
My cousin got nothing but what you've described, and as I mentioned before, she is currently on a Restraining Order from my aunt.

If I'm ready to go. I am ready to go. That child is coming along one way or another. And I assure you, as Lazy put it, I'd be in full control. lol

Our nieces and nephew (one in particular) pull all kinds of hateful disrespectful and even hurtful/mean at home with their grandmother (the mom barely disciplines). They know how to behave when they come here. Uncle Ron and Auntie John don't play that bullshit. Uh-uh. hmph!

nod see, they know not to mess with you that's why. Most kids are very sharp, they know who to push and who to behave with.

Yeah, my mother in law can be trying at times (to me lol) but it's undeserved. She's doing a good thing by keeping a roof over hubby's Sis and her kids and that's the payback she gets.
The one is purposely hurtful, calls her things like old, and fat and ugly. And outright says "I don't have to listen to you, just to my mother."
Terrible.

Leashes for children attach to a harness around the chest or to a wrist, not to a child's neck.
Yeah, some kids are terrible, but this is just wrong. That kid was still small enough to pick up and carry.

It looks pretty bad since it's done in public, but is it really worse than what many, many parents do to their children at home?

It does seem a little harsh but, if for example I had said to my son...

"WE are going soon and no you are not going to have chocolate before your dinner"

"I don't want to go"

"We we are going even if i have to drag you out of the shop" *thinks, oh shit, if he doesn't come now i am going to have to go through with this, for failure to do so will undermine my authority as his parent and he will loose all respect - next time it will be worse.

"NO! i am not going"

drag ensues.....lol

Even when i write it like this i find it hard to imagine a good justification but you can see the point.

Are the child reins round his neck? Who knows, difficult to say. But public parenting as a show of strength (if thats what it is) are much better than seeing parents feeding and pacifying their kids constantly with food and toys just so they can shop. Power to the lady - as long as she is not being cruel.

Some replies in here surprise me. A total lack of control of a public situation shouldn't force one to resort to abuse of power. Especially if you're the one that decided to bear the child, which means the responibility is always there. You can also pick the child up and walk out.

The first four years of a child's life are crucial. I know this is this just a small clip, but think about it, if this happens in public then what happens in private?
