I knew just about enough to get by after my first couple of weeks here. It probably took me about a year of actually living here to know a really useful amount of Thai and probably 2 years to be very comfortable speaking it. I'm definitely not fluent, but I'd say I know all conversational stuff plus a bit extra and it definitely comes naturally to me now, sometimes ahead of English. My poor brain! I understand more than I can speak so if I watch TV or listen to the radio I know the topics being spoken about, but not always every detail.

I first came to Thailand as a stop on the way to NZ with a friend. Just backpacking. We nearly chose other countries in S.E. Asia for that 2 week stop but thankfully decided upon Thailand. Ultimately what led me to move here was a woman.

I've lived here permanently for about 7 years, I think, after first coming here in 2000, then going back and forth between Thailand and the UK for 4 or 5 months at a time for about 2 years.

p.s. After this number of years and given my pretty decent ability with languages, I should really be better at Thai than I am. If I'm honest I haven't really actively tried to learn anything new besides the odd bit of vocab in about 3 or 4 years. All I've achieved is having the words come more naturally to me. I really should learn to read and write Thai too. I think it would take me about a year of daily hard work to become pretty much fluent speaking it and maybe 2 or 3 years going to a school to add the reading and writing, but I've never got round to it.
