hair salon prices: men vs. women

Why is it that womens' hair cuts cost more than mens'? The given reason is that women have longer hair and therefore are more work for a stylist, but even if a woman with short hair and a man with long hair go to the same salon the woman will still pay more for her cut.

Why is this? How is this legal, to charge more for a goddamned haircut based on what's between the clients' legs?

Well, when I've walked into those "haircut for men, 15 euros" -places in the past, they've been like "oh, uh... it doesn't apply for you".

falloff

Fucking morons. 15-20% of the male population in this country who are under thirty or around that age have long hair.

I could see the argument for charging more for long hair or even for certain hair types because it does create more work for the stylist, but a flat rate that's more expensive for females than for males?

lol

I'd say about the same percentage of women around here have short hair.

I do. In fact, if I didn't think it'd hurt my chances of finding a 2nd job I'd just shave it all off. I hate having to look after hair.

Men get their hair cut. Women get their hair styled. Styling cost more. Plus you have to pay for all that jibber jabber. lol

I'm not talking about barber shops where the dudes go in for a quick cut and leave. I'm talking about salons, the kind that come with chatty-ass stylists (shut UP, already! I'm not your friend and I don't care about your fiance....) and styling products aplenty for all customers. Women have to pay more, and that makes no sense.

but you just answered your own question. you're not necessarily paying for the cut so much as all the useless shit that comes with it like overpriced styling products they use on your hair, the mindless chat from the stylist and the so-called ambiance of the lady salon. it's all bullshit but most women either don't recognize or don't care. with that said, women will always pay more for the same ass cut a man is getting. we even pay more for clothes and our clothes aren't even made with the same quality as mens clothing. bunchobullshit. confused

In a hair salon, you are charged the same for a cut. Man or woman, the price is listed as is. Trims are cheaper, and in some salons men are lined up and beards are trimmed along the face, it is included in the "styling". Men are actually more work as far as cuts go usually. Lining takes a steady hand and skill.
This is why most barbers gave up the ol' scissor over comb technique and switched to the faster clippers & trimmers.

Even if men go to salons they're charged less.

You're right about the clothes and stuff too.

hmmm you're in the US right? I know certain stylists that charge more for their cuts (just because they are more skilled)... but in the salons in my area, the price for a cut is the same. Blow dry/rollersetting and styling runs you more after that. Weird.

I feel your pain though, a press and curl runs me $120.00. neutral That's why I learned how to do my own do.

A woman's EGO will NOT let her pay $15.00 for a haircut.

Up until about 2 years ago, I went to the Aveda Student Salon in NYC for a $18.95 + tip haircut (and that included having it blown dry).

talk to the hand I beg to differ, many women jump at the chance to get their hair done at a girlfriend's house in hopes to pay next to nothing to get their wigs hooked up.

This is exactly why many women brag about the sales they catch. "I only paid $____
instead of $_____ for my blahblah."

Naw, I'm in Vancouver, Canada. Maybe it's something to do with the area, but I don't think I've ever seen a unisex salon -high end or lowbrow -that didn't charge more for women.

Goes a long way in explaining why I rarely get my hair cut. lol

women's short hair cuts are different. Unless they're using clippers up the sides, they're different.

I don't think they're different here either. The price for a cut depends on the salon and the stylist (different stylists will charge different prices) and other services (color, foils, etc.) depend on you hair style and length. No salon I've ever been to breaks it down by gender.

When I used to get my hair cut in salons in central London there was no difference in price. You paid based on the stylists experience/level not your sex.

Costs to much so these days I do it myself.
