Gay Bashing Victim Blames Himself

The victim of a vicious hate beating that took place in Brooklyn in 2005 has assigned blame in the incident to an unexpected party: himself.

An Aug. 6 article at Gay City News reported that Dwan Prince, who was allegedly beaten by Steven Pomie four years ago, sent a letter to Pomie in which Prince blamed himself for the beating that Pomie, together with two others, reportedly dished out.

The article noted that the letter may play a part in Pomie’s retrial.

Wrote Prince, "First please allow me to deeply apology for my hated comment."

The letter, from July 20, continues, "Please I do hope you know I am truly deeply sorry for what ever was sayed [sic] that night.

"I have made some big mistakes in my life and that was the stupidiest [sic] and biggest one of all."

The Gay City News article detailed how the attack took place, with Pomie and two others allegedly beat Prince after Prince flirted with Pomie.

Pomie then reportedly launched a second attack on Prince, together with one other man.

Pomie returned by himself for a third round even though Prince was unconscious on the ground; bystanders sought to restrain him, at which point Pomie allegedly responded, "Yo, leave it alone son, the nigger’s gay," and "He’s a faggot."

Another witness testified that although Pomie was discouraged from launching a third attack on the unconscious Prince, he nonetheless landed a kick with his Timerland boot-shod foot.

"Then blood started gushing," recounted the witness.

Pomie, who is now 26, was found guilty of first degree assault and a second charge of first-degree assault as a hate crime.

He received a sentence of 25 years; the sentence stipulated that Pomie might only come up for early release after serving a minimum of 21 years.

The conviction was overturned on appeal, and a retrial ordered with reduced charges, the article said. Pomie will be tried for second-degree assault and also for second-degree assault as a hate crime.

How Prince’s letter, in which Prince blames himself for the beating he received, will affect the case is a matter of speculation, as is why Prince assigned blame to himself.

However, Prince’s letter may indicate something about the assault victim’s frame of mind.

As quoted by the Gay City News, Prince wrote Pomie that he had requested a lesser sentence for his assailant.

"I was at blame so it is my to my strongest degree that you get out as soon as possible," the letter reads in part.

"What I asked the state to do is sentence you to five years and five years parole," the letter added.

Prince also expressed the wish that the two men might forge a relationship of some sort, and voiced what might be taken as a claim no longer to be gay.

"Steve you changed me!" Prince exclaims in the letter.

"So hopefully when you get out we can hang out.

"You know me. I know you," the letter continues.

"I [can] help you calm that angry machine down. And allow you to know I am not gay but a lover, and you can find me a female I can love and can love me."

The article said that Prince is HIV+ and is now studying the Bible and thinking of becoming a husband and father.

"I am looking to change my life these days," the article quoted Prince as telling the publication.

"I am looking for a female who I can marry and have my sperm washed and have children," Prince added.

"With me going to church, I feel myself that I must try to live by the Bible, I must try to live by God’s law."

As for Pomie, whose retrial is scheduled for Sept. 1, "I want him to know that, if he read or if he didn’t read [the letter], I want him to know my emotion and feeling behind what happened.

"I want him to know my true emotion and love for him," Prince added.

"There is a God that looks over everybody and he raised me from death and Steven was not able to kill me," Prince continued. "I don’t hate him for trying to kill me."

Prince’s letter and comments may reflect a faith-based view of the incident, with Christian compassion coming to the fore.

But for some, Prince blaming himself for the violent actions of his attack smacks of further victimization.

An Aug. 11 article on the case that appeared at Web site Feast of Fun under the headline, "Gay Bashing Victim: Bashed ’Straight?’" garnered disbelieving comments from readers.

"It’s just too weird," commented one reader.

"I’d like more facts please. And I’d love to know if there is a payday involved."

Wrote another of Prince, "So he was victimized twice then."

Added the commentator, "Sad, sad, sad."

WTF... why the hell didn't they restrain him?

The whole thing is a sad mess.

Great. All we need is more ideas for the Republicans to latch on to.

They're still pissed off about the gay-to-straight therapy being dropped.

Jesus Christ. So what he's saying is that he brought it on himself??? this is a classic case of how religion corrupts completely. So guilted that he will assume responsibility for someone else's actions!
