There was speculation??? Really?

I didn't see one episode and haven't even read the article, but doesn't speculation imply there was some doubt?

Who?

When will nobodies who do televised karaoke contests learn they're not real celebrities, and that next week no one's going to remember their names? Who gives a shit if some fool who was on AI likes dick?

He's one of those guys whose looks will fall apart in about a decades time. I don't watch the show so I don't know what he sounds like but everyone is saying he was far better than the winner.

He's awful. Just dreadful. I don't know what the fascination with him is, or why he had to stay closeted during the competition. That made me dislike him even more.

I'll admit I'm a fan of his. The kid can SING! He did get a little Axl-screechy at times but for the most part he was awesome. I'm glad he didn't win because that frees him from their weird contract system to do bigger and better things (like tour with Queen, which would be perfect for him! IMO).

For all you non-believers I give you Tracks of my Tears

I thought it was great...

and does any really give a shit if he's gay or not, it's fuckin' 2009 people, get a life you homophobic losers!

Can your average Joe or Jane tell you, say, who was runner up in season 3?

Can most people name anyone from AI besides Kelly Clarkson after their initial burst of "fame" is over? Hell, has anyone besides Kelly Clarkson even ended up with a real career?

You know what? Yes, they can. And yes, most have great careers.

It's totally fine to dislike a show, to trash what it stands for, etc, etc....but at least keep it real. Just because you hate it or can't name past winners doesn't mean that your opinion is of the majority.

I really doubt it. A great career is not doing mall tours and paying People -or as the case may unfortunately be, Rolling Stone -to run a piece on you every once in a while so people don't forget you.

How many people are still jamming to their Ruben Studdard CD's? I know I can't walk into a second hand store without seeing a pile of ex-AI alum.

Who is doing mall tours? Do you even know what any of them are doing for a living? Well, I can guarantee right now that it's not working in retail somewhere. wink

As for Ruben, he's like many, many other R&B artists you've probably never heard of that are enjoying success.

Ruben did/does gospel. He just released an album. Perhaps pop wise he wasn't great, but the black charts liked him. Fantasia....well hell i don't know what she's doing, but her family is squandering her dough as fast as she is.

The girl that sings country, Carrie, is doing pretty well. The spin offs are too. Jordin Sparks had to stop touring for vocal chord surgery?

I mean, I don't even watch the show, but I'm aware of what the alum are doing n stuff. That Daughtry dude is doing pretty well too.

What the hell happened to Taylor Hicks? wink

At least I didn't pretend to be a real singer or call myself a diva because I won a karaoke contest. I'd say I come up winning, by comparison.

Trust, I know what's going on in the music world besides the Top 40 charts. It's really remarkable how the old pros in the business and people who had to legitimately work for what they have have no respect for performers who do shows like AI.

Actually, you're not totally right with the old pros having no respect for it. In fact, the record business for those old pros was not much different than this show. Auditions, grooming by the label, singing songs they didn't write. That’s how it was from the 50s onward.

I simply do not get why these kids are being labeled talentless and not worthy of success. They have the same dream that other artists have to make it big, they just choose a different venue but that doesn't make them any less worthy at all.

I never said they were talentless. The odd time I've seen the show there's been some really superior vocals comiung from some of the contestants. I just think they should have to actually put in the work if they want to be stars, and quit acting like they're all that because they went on TV and a cranky Brit, an overenthusiastic black dude, and a doped-up "star" tittered over them. confused

What IS lacking IMO in the performance aspect of a lot of these kids is, well, the performance. You can't carry a performing career on good pipes alone. You also need stage presence and emotional believability and a lot of them just don't seem to have it.

Well,as I recall Rolling Stone covers were once a symbol of "making it" in the music industry.

I'm not doubting the guy's talent, but it seems just about anyone with a bit of fame can land one these days.

Where do you get that they are acting like they are 'all that'? So when Rolling Stone calls wanting to do a story on them they are supposed to be like, "No, sorry. I can't because I was just on a tv show"?

These kids did put in the work, and a lot of them have being doing their time on their own before this, working and waiting for their big break - which is really no different that artists in general.

So they might get more exposure than the struggling artist singing in seedy nightclubs and selling CDs from their cars because they fit into this nice cute little package that people prefer to see…but don’t hate them for that, that’s hardly fair - hate the buying public.

Winning a karaoke contest should be treated as it is. If someone's going to be a star they should have to have something more than a decent voice and days on end to take off work to stand in line.

I don't have a problem with singers doing songs they didn't write themselves, but shows like AI do nothing but foster the idea that all a good singer really has to do is phone it in, karaoke-style. They belt out songs like they all think they're Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey -even the guys -but rarely look like they believe what they're singing. I think I just really hate the soulless, emotionless style AI's helped make popular. And I cant fathom how or why anyone would fine it appealing to listen to,

I agree. Old pros unfortunately have to grab guaranteed hit makers. No room for risk.
