I've never been stood up; but my ex-boyfriend used to cancel on me last minute all the time.  (This was towards the end of the relationship when we were fighting most of the time.)
I'm confused about your "relationship" with this dude. Are you just friends, or is he a friend with benefits? Either way it's lame that he didn't even text or call you; but if you know he has liver disease and is unreliable you need to cut him some slack. I have a guy with whom I've been friends since 5th grade who is always, ALWAYS late. For everything. When we make plans I either give him a fake meeting time of 15-30 earlier than necessary or know that he will be late. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa.
