Napoleon Dynamite: Love it? Hate it? Netflix.com says Napoleon Dynamite is one of few films that defies prediction of viewer reaction based on that viewer's ratings of other films. And reactions I've seen tend to be extreme: People seem either to love it or hate it.
Have you seen it? Love it? Hate it? Not moved either way? Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

stupid but I'm in the middle. It seemed very 80's to me until they played backstreet boys at the end!
Uncle ricco was cute | |

I would be willing to bet that the haters only saw it once. When I watched it the first time, I was all --> I just didn't think it was that funny - and couldn't see what the fuss was about.
Fortunately, before I returned it to Netflix, I mentioned my reaction to one of my friends, who said, "You have to watch it more than once. It's way funnier the second time." So I watched it again and - lo and behold - she was right! It is much funnier the second time. I think what happened is that I was so busy (the first time) trying to figure when and where the film was taking place, that I overthought it. It's one of those movies that you just have to go with - and accept that it makes no sense whatsoever. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think this film is waaaaay overrated. I think it was unimaginative and flat-out stupid.
That said, I'm willing to be proven wrong and watch it again. But if I still hate it, well... Let me just think about that.

Love it.
Everyone has known a Napoleon in their lives and everyone knows that kids that are considered outcasts and nerds are not the happy go lucky geeks that many movies portray them as...they are filled with bitterness and anger.

I had a friend who couldn't mention it without cracking the hell up. So I decided to rent it.
Maybe if she didn't laugh so much in her description of the movie, I wouldn't have been sitting there like waiting to laugh. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

The first time I watched the movie, I honestly felt so guilty that I didn't know whether I loved it or hated it. The situations are sooo possible -- and pathetic -- and the parts were played sooo believably that I walked away feeling as if I'd been laughing at real people.
I've watched it a bunch of times now, and from the second time on it's definitely just funny. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
