Should I get a laptop with XP or wait for Windows 7?

If the latter: Why?

I'm assuming I'd save money buying now?

Some of the new hardware doesn´t really work with XP ( even though I find XP to be far superior to Vista unless you´re a total geek). I thought it´s almost impossible to buy a laptop with XP these days. They always come with Vista already installed, or with no operating system at all.
I´m not familiar with Windows7.

Get a MAC. lol

I know Dell offers them.

It depends on whether your getting a full-fledged laptop or one of those netbooks. When the netbooks came out last year t hey were running mostly Linux, but the ones out now come with XP installed. If you're just using a portable computer to write documents and surf the net, then get a netbook with XP installed. If you're getting a laptop with the full functionality of a desktop, then I'd wait about a month and a half for the Windows 7 rollout.

I've been getting some ads from Micro Center (which is a decent computer store BTW) which say that anyone buying a new computer with Vista installed will be allowed to get a free upgrade to Windows 7. If you really can't wait or don't want a netbook, you may want to check that out.

Thanks, huey!

Yeah, I know about the free upgrade.

Two questions for you:

1. How would 7 benefit me more than XP?

2. Wouldn't buying a laptop with 7, in the fall, be more expensive than buying the equivalent now with XP?

Like I said earlier, it depends on your functionality. If you're just using it for basic office work plus some net surfing, and mainly as a backup to your desktop, then XP will be just fine. If you plan on using it for a long time with upgrades for peripherals, games, and/or media (photos, videos, etc.), then you'll want to get the upgrade just for the Media Center portion of the OS.

XP was / is the best Windows ever. Well, basically the only good version of Windows to be honest.

I'll say something though: get a laptop without any excessive fan noise. There are some really loud motherfuckers with Vista and accelerated graphics cards on the market these days. Some of them are even so irritatingly loud that there's no way in hell you would be even allowed to use them during a meeting or a class.

Yes, mine has Vista and can be a bit loud sometimes, though not really too loud.
What would happen if I simply replaced the Vista OS with XP? Would that cause hardware problems since most hardware depends on Vista these days, and would it make my laptop more silent and save hard disk space? I don´t really need a fancy OS, I just use my computer for surfing the net and simple text stuff, nothing big, no games, just simple stuff.

Wait for Windows 7. It's a great OS, but because it is a MAJOR leap from XP, the upgrade process is next to impossible.

Upgrading from Vista is an easy upgrade. The 64 bit Vista has been the best OS I have used. If you get a 64 bit processor, I would go with Vista 64 now and upgrade to 7 when it comes out.

Thanks, Mars! I'm leaning Wait-'til-7-release.

I´m really curious now. What, in your opinion, makes the 64 bit Vista version the best OS you´ve ever used ? A good friend of mine, who knows a lot about computers, almost persuaded me to downgrade from Vista to XP again in order to save resources and because I don´t really need Vista. I stick with Vista anyway but I don´t really understand what´s so great about it.

Help me ! lol

It's extremely stable and has a lot of cool features. I almost never have an issue with it. Now, this is the 64 bit version and did not get a lot of exposure. For just a basic OS, I would still stick with XP Professional until 7 comes out.

I have two laptops with 32 bit Vista, and honestly, NEVER have a problem with either of them. The OS has been stable. I update it often, removed the bloatware and tweaked it a little to load faster. Other than a bit more confirm clicks, I have nothing bad to say about it.

Ace thanks for the info about the bluetooth for iTouch. hug

I know a lot of people have stayed with XP or either uninstalled Vista and went back to Windows OS, XP Pro. Either way, I've taken upon myself to get away from anything Microsoft period, I'm going with Linux Unbuntu Distro.

Wow, so many varied opinions because I hate 64 bit Vista. I need a new laptop but I think I'll wait til Windows 7 comes out.
