Love in 2-D: Men Who Love Body Pillows

Lisa Katayama for the New York Times: Nisan didn't mean to fall in love with Nemutan. Their first encounter -- at a comic-book convention that Nisan's gaming friends dragged him to in Tokyo -- was serendipitous. Nisan was wandering aimlessly around the crowded exhibition hall when he suddenly found himself staring into Nemutan's bright blue eyes. In the beginning, they were just friends. Then, when Nisan got his driver's license a few months later, he invited Nemutan for a ride around town in his beat-up Toyota. They went to a beach, not far from the home he shares with his parents in a suburb of Tokyo. It was the first of many road trips they would take together. As they got to know each other, they traveled hundreds of miles west -- to Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, sleeping in his car or crashing on friends' couches to save money. They took touristy pictures under cherry trees, frolicked like children on merry-go-rounds and slurped noodles on street corners. Now, after three years together, they are virtually inseparable. "I've experienced so many amazing things because of her," Nisan told me,

rubbing Nemutan's leg warmly. "She has really changed my life."

Nemutan doesn't really have a leg. She's a stuffed pillowcase -- a 2-D depiction of a character, Nemu, from an X-rated version of a PC video game called Da Capo,

This is right up there with those dolls. disbelief

Except the dolls show a lil bush.
lol

and people actually have sex with them lol

Loneliness and rejection can certainly make people do odd things.

It's sad that these people can't seem to find the kind of social interaction that many of us take for granted.

In this world of porn & hot pillows it's easier to not make the effort seek out that type of interaction.

I disagree.

Most people do not actively seek out that kind of interaction without some kind of social impairment of some sort.

I don't understand, you mean to use porn or body pillows & blow up dolls you need to have social impairment?

No, I'm saying that people who have 'relationships' with dolls and pillows are usually not social butterflies.

I'm not talking about porn.

But I don't think easy access to porn makes people choose relationships with inanimate objects over real people.

well, yes, obviously a Lars & the Real Girl type situation is basically a guy with serious social issues.

But at a more common level I think we're talking about a chicken & egg type deal. I think porn & other "sex substitutes" are just easier and less intimidating for some people than finding a girl to sleep with, and can easily lead to developing a social impairment where the guy no longer seeks out companionship.

I just don't agree. It's the other way around in my opinion.

lol Erin underestimates male laziness and the adaptability of our visual stimulation, and the effectiveness of such a combination.

I avoided this thread b/c I thought, "how interesting could it be? lots of folks have body pillows on their beds..." I had NO IDEA whofarted This is actually WORSE than the real doll losers, & incredibly sad! I mean damn, it's a pillow with a drawing on it eyepop & he's treating it like it's a real person. Hell, why not introduce a potato as your fiance? hammer It's just unbelievable, to be THAT disconnected from real intimacy sigh
