I believe I have found a puppy mill - IMMEDIATE help needed!!! updated!

I read an ad in the paper on saturday with over 170 dogs listed, the ad claims some of them are "heavily bred"

I dont want to give out to much information here since i have had many phone calls with the police narrowing down to the city they are in to go out and investigate. however, i know that there are many people here who are very into animal rights and whatnot....what is my next move? who can i call to make sure that the man faces the best possible chance of losing it all and the animals can be taken care of the best way possible?

they live in a small town, i just got off the phone with the deputy sheriff who frankly didnt see the impending need to go out there to investigate. for all i know this guy is friends with the man.

who do i call next?

If you can, as soon as possible, find out what breeds are at the mill. Most breeds have a rescue organization that specializes in that breed. Typically, these rescue organization's will take some or all of the puppy mill dogs that they focus on and pay for their medical care and help get them adopted. If you find out any of them are Brussels Griffons send me an orgnote cuz I foster for the National Rescue organization and I know they'll move Heaven and Earth to get a Griff out of a mill. This is a good thing for you to do, good luck. thumbs up!

Good point! We got both our current dogs from breed-specific rescues. They're very active.

Try Dean Koontz. Seriously. This is a HUGE issue to him. He's written books about puppy mills.

Bump around www.deankoontz.com. I bet him or someone there will know exactly what to do.

Good luck!

Do all of the above.

These places need to be shut down.
We had to report someone the other day for doing a small scale puppy mill type thing in her very small flat.
You have to think of the puppies and the ppl that are spending money to bring these puppies into their homes and getting attached. Also you have to think about what it is doing to the breed. pissed
Puppy mill ppl make me so angry!

Good luck with getting in touch with the right ppl. The authorities here said they would let us know that outcome of our report.

I did not stop, eventually the deputy went out to the property to check on the dogs, he claims they are well taken care of although they do live in wire meshed floor kennels - which we know can distroy their paws and creates a poor living environment for them.

eventually i decided to call the dept of agriculture in that state - turns out, as i suspected, this man has no license for that and state law requires that you carry a license if you have over 4 females - you can PLAINLY see that there are way over 4 females there!!!

i am waiting for a callback from the deputy who i will be asking to go back and ask him to view a copy of his license.

im still pissed as fuck

the sheriff claims that they look like they are nice looking dogs and they seem to be taken care of. he claims that if he has broken the law by not having a license that would be a matter for the state to handle not the sheriffs office. he said that the man told him that the neighbors are complaining about the noise from the dogs and so they have decided to get rid of them - therefore, since they are getting rid of them there is no reason to procede with any action. meanwhile, it is near 100 degrees here, these babies are in wire bottomed crates, although he did say that they had shading... im very sad

I'm concerned that these animals will be taken by the county, put into a shelter, then put down when nobody comes to take them.

This is what USUALLY happens.

FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS! well, sort of good news....

i called the dept of agriculture back to make sure they were doing something about the phone call to them this morning. the woman that answered said she wasnt sure how much she could talk to me about so she sent me to her supervisor. he informed me that he was actually at that property on friday (the ad that i read was posted on saturday). the man had entered into an agreement stating that he would get rid of the dogs by october 1 (which seems a bit far off to me), that he would sell down to just 3 females left and maintain that amount from now on, that the agriculture people can stop by to investigate at any point in time from here out and that any dogs that were not sold would be handed over to the authorities on october 1.

this is why it claims this is a complete sell out of the kennel - however the reason is not because she and her husband have decided to do shit, its because they were directed to do so by the state. oh, i forgot to say - things picked up quickly when i checked and found out that they had no license...suddenly everyone wanted to talk to me at once!! as i said, once i reached the right people, i found out that they had already worked on this just a few days prior. thank god there ARE people out there watching out for the lil babies...

i had a great conversation with SCNDLS, she was very helpful on many different things... the pups will never know what we do to protect them and look out for them, but in the end WE know that we didnt just turn our backs on them and thats what matters - perhaps now they can be adopted to good homes and taken care of... or one can hope.

thanks guys again for your sound listening ear - as a team, the org is something else!!!! grouphug
