Because here, we can post something that on its own might bomb, but as a part of THIS thread, it's a worthwhile contribution! For instance, I wanted to tell you all about my tennis tournament experience today. My son and daughter were both playing, but it is a big tournament, and they were at separate sites. The sites were about 7 miles apart, but it took about 20 minutes to get from one to the other. My wife had to go to a baby shower, so I had to do all the tennis duty. I spent all day going back and forth on Spencer Highway in Pasadena. My kids played in 3 total matches, involving 51 games and a tiebreaker. I got to see 11 of the games and the tiebreaker. See? If I started a thread on that, it would bomb. But I have THIS thread, and it's a star post! Danny, you are a genius! Too funny! What a good dad! I hope your kids did great!! Thanks! My daughter played great but lost, 6-3, 6-3. My son is in the finals of the consolation bracket. He plays tomorrow at 8 AM. He's preparing by going to bed; I'm preparing by heading out to go see Houston's favorite rock band, Rat Ranch.

Me neither; it just isn't worth it. I just shrug it off and say, "Oh well". That kind of becomes easy to do when you've been on the org for as long as I have. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The reason I brought it up is because it happens sometimes in Music: Non-Prince. I'll remember a song or something that I want to share with others and NO ONE will post and it'll sink like a stone. That leaves me to wonder either no one likes the song, no one remembers the song, or I'm just plain weird. But that's just an example. I've seen others start a thread that may have two or three responses and then sink. Just wondered how others felt about that... If you post a song with nothing else, you don't know how many people listened to it. Is a response required? Was one requested? Indifferent. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

There seems to be a fine line that needs to be walked in order for a thread to take off.

If, as SUPRMAN suggested, you just post a song/video with nothing else, people may not know how to respond to it. But if you say something about the clip, and then ask for opinions, others may chime in. Like: "I hate this song, who else does?" or "Where were YOU when this song came out?", then people have a clue as to where to go with it. But you have to start with a point of view, so others may either agree with it - adding their own take, or otherwise challenge you. (...and fully expect you'll be challenged, or clowned, or have your thread hijacked). But on the other hand, you can open a new thread by saying too much. If you start a thread by essentially writing an entire dissertation, listing all the in's & out's of any particular subject, that leaves nothing else for anyone to add. If you DO happen to have a ton of information on a given topic, don't drop it all up front. Save a little, and sprinkle it sparingly throughout as the thread grows. I've found the middle ground to be: Open with your particular take or opinion on the subject (...or with a really, really good thought provoking question, lol), but then leave enough room for someone else to add something new to it, or even more importantly - to disagree with your point of view. Disagreements are, after all, what drive discussions (...and facilitate longer threads). So don't be afraid to be bold in your stance, but be prepared to defend it. All that being said, I rarely start threads (unless I feel strongly about something that I don't see being discussed anywhere else in the forum). Because usually, by the the time I come across a news item or other topic of interest that i want to discuss, 3 threads have already been started about it by someone else on The Org. And I can't see any point of starting a new thread just to be starting a new thread. Personally, I think this thread was textbook perfect, and had no chance of bombing! Kudos to DannyD5050!
