Back in the day when a female was rape, the law always blamed the female. She was dressed too sexy or she must have done something to lead the men on. I'm surprised to hear that this still goes on. But it is NOT rare. Sad but true.

It wasn't the law that blamed women who were raped...it was the application of draconian christian morality that blamed women who were raped...and yes, I agree with you that sadly, that kind of mentality still exists today...I'm an EO advisor and I teach all kinds of sexual harassment/sexual assault prevention classes...and it would flip your wig to know that there are WOMEN who feel that women "ask" for it when they get raped...or that they lie to get attention if a guy dumps them...as for this case, the girls parents disowned her because their culture doesn't allow or accept that kind of "honor violation"..the state has already removed her from the family and she is in the foster system...

Someone needs to charge the family with child abandonment and neglect at the very least.

I am at a loss for words, it's so hard to believe that people can be so blind to the world around them. Just because you aren't the ones "teaching" them such things, there is enough around them that does.

My heart goes out to this little girl!!!

Truly is sad that people have that kind of mentality....especially when children are in involved....that poor girl not only has to deal with getting raped, but also with the insanity of her family blaming her for their loss of "honor"...

Just because she (hopefully) might end up in foster care doesn't equate to early pregnancy and a bleek future. Many girls move on with their lives and with a great support group, lead productive lives and I hope this happens to her.Her family's attitude sounds purely cultural and that's a whole other story

Of course there are exceptions and I really hope she is one of them, but let's face reality, most of these stories don't have happy endings. Hopefully she will have strength within herself to get through these times because she doesn't have any family to help her. It's sad sad

There are programs throughout the nation that deal with this.Due to cultural differences in some African and Arab countries, there are alot of young women (various ages) that go through this. Many get help and lead productive lives.I've seen the program work first hand. And that's what we must wish for this little girl.We all watch a little bit of too much Maury and Springer and seen the negative effects. But lets remain positive and not write her off.

http://www.examiner.com/x-5919-Norfolk-Crime-Examiner~y2009m7d23-8yearold-girl-raped-by-Liberian-teenagersfather-blames-daughter

On July 18, an 8-year-old girl in Phoenix was lured into a shed near her home by four Liberian boys, where she was restrained and sexually assaulted by the boys. Her attackers reportedly tricked her into entering the shed with the offer of chewing gum.

Nearby residents called 911, when they heard the girl’s screams coming from the shed and seeing her run away only partially clothed.

The boys ages 14, 13, 10, and 9 are all in custody at this time. All four admitted to having planned the attack.

14-year-old Steven Tuopeh, will be tried as an adult, He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of kidnapping. He is the only suspect whose name has been released.

The 13-year-old has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, and one count of kidnapping. The 10-year-old has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of kidnapping. The 9-year-old has been charged with one count of sexual assault.

The girl who is also Liberian, is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.

According to Phoenix police, the girl’s family blame her for the attack. When asked by an ABC15 reporter as to what punishment he would like to see for the attackers, the girl’s father answered, “Nothing.”

http://www.ktla.com/news/...8744.story

I saw that on the news. Absolutely horrible. The parents are just as much to blame as the boys because they neglected her, didn't teach her to be weary of boys and didn't protect her afterward. It is incredibly sad that this father wants no punishment for the boys violating his child. I hope CPS charges the parents for neglect. Surely it's against the law in Phoenix to abandon your child. Of course she is not safe if she returns to her father. He'd probably kill her. Fuckin' primitive people. disbelief

What on earth does ghetto have to do with this? These mofos were from Liberia not the inner city of Detroit. They would behave the same way in their own country, except in Liberia the girl would have been murdered and her mother too.

The president of Liberia said, as of 2006, there are laws against that and that attitude of "shame on the victim" is not acceptable anymore

Are u referring to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf the new president of Liberia, the only sane one in years (Apparently she is doing a great job, but faces enormous aodds after the country has been wracked with war since the Samuel Doe takeover in 1980)

Words fail me.
This entire situation is too sad to contemplate.

I find all of it disturbing. The fact that an 8 year old has to be introduced to the worse in human nature, and to top that off, has absolutely no support from her family--I mean, she probably thinks everything is her fault. sad

As far as the boys, I'm shocked and stunned at their ages. I remember at 12 always wanting to get laid, but never, under any circumstances, was the notion of rape an option. What's happened to society?
What's the use in trying a 14 year old as an adult (when clearly he lacks the judgment, maturity, and training of an adult)?

No good is going to come from this terrible case.

no, because the girl crying would have disturbed me endlessly.
It's not about what's right and wrong--at 12 years old I barely knew that.
But I wouldn't have been able to watch her cry. It's one of the reasons why I can't watch torture scenes in movies, etc. etc. I can't stand to see someone subjected to treatment that violates them. I actually lost sleep when someone sent me a link to an execution video. Never again. lol
