The authorities found out about the loophole when they were investigating a 16-year-old runaway who got a job at Cheaters strip club in Providence. They couldn't throw the owner in the clink, because there is currently no state law banning minors from getting nekkid to Motley Crue songs for money. There is a law which states that anybody who employs a person under the age of 18 for prostitution whoring or any other lewd or indecent act can be thrown in prison. Apparently, the term "lewd or indecent" is completely subjective (meaning it depends how fugly the stripper is), so it doesn't prevent girls from stripping.
Officials are currently working overtime to get a new ordinance on the books which will make it illegal for youngins to work the pole stroll. There's actually two sides to this "lewd and indecent" clause. One of which constitutes what is "lewd and indecent", and the other which is "employing a person under the age of 18 for prostitution". The lewdness and indecency clauses have been debated ad nauseam, but it's standard practice that strip club owners never technically "employ" strippers to work at their clubs; strippers are always hired as "independent contractors". This gives the strip club owner some protection against liability, plus they don't have to pay benefits or pay FICA taxes that they are required to do for their employees.  | |

Believe it or not, this doesn't bother me too much. Fucked if I know why. I guess I'm more bothered by the fact that so many women (and girls, apparently) HAVE to strip just to pay the bills. Up here there's been a surge of women taking up stripping and web cam work and massage parlours and the like just to cover groceries and hydro. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered it myself. When I lived in Cranston,RI(outside of Providence) NEVER did i go near that place. And the fact that I know its by the water on Allens rd has nothing to do with it....lol | |
