Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (SPOILERS)

Well, what did you think?

My thoughts:
It was darker (as expected). Young Tom Riddle was creepy. I actually missed the meeting with the Dursleys. Bellatrix was just a little too over-the-top for me. I laughed quite a few times; sometimes the execution of the jokes made them effective even when they were obvious. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I imagine someone who hasn't read the book may get a little confused.

Haven't seen it and I don't have immediate plans, but I have to say that kid who plays Draco Malfoy gives up some good face every now and then.

This poster isn't the greatest shot of him, but he does look sufficiently bad-*ss, IMHO.

*****SPOILERS*****

saw it at midnight, it was great up until the end. It looks like they used all the budget until the cave scene and then ran out of money. My daughter was PISSED about no invisibility cloak, no stupefy no nothing on harry at the end. NO BATTLE for Hogwarts the army is unproven. How in the hell are they going to tie up all the ends no coins for for dumbeldore's army? How are Luna and Neville going to know to go to the 3 broom sticks? No real explanation of how bad Fenwir Greyback is and that he EATS children. No indication that Snape took malfoy. This next movies is going to either have a lot to make up or its going to jump the shark.

still cried like a baby when Dumbledore died, and when Fawkes left bawl

Draco does nothing in this one after his scene on the train.
Overall, it was just there.
Having read all the books and seen all the movies. I was disappointed.
The book read like a movie treatment but I didn't see that translated to the screen.

Wrong. Some of the best scenes in the movie. They are getting better at showing what the game is like. I will always watch those scenes in the future when this movie is on cable.

Anti-climactic.
They set you up for Dumbledore dying from the beginning.

See, I'm dying to see it again because I can't quite make my mind up about it. Yes, there was a lot missing (especially much of the back story of Tom Riddle), but I enjoyed what was there.

I thought the ending was a bit of a let down. I mean you have the Death Eaters invading Hogwarts and all they really do is trash the great hall. Ok they kill Dumbledore as well but other than that I was expecting some form of resistance from the students and teachers. And wtf is with Snape just letting Harry go. He has him right there so why doesn't he take him to Lord V and end everything then and there....Logic fails right there.

It's a huge battle scene in the book.

Well, that does seem hard to swallow since they aren't escaping the battle like in the book... hmmm

Exactly! and WTF is up with Potter charging after them? To do WHAT exactly. Even devastated, I can't see Harry Potter doing that and I don't remember that in the book.

WTF???!!!!
You're right! That's how the Great Hall got trashed. And Neville . . . Wow.
Now I'm pissed because I'm remembering the book. (I can't re-read her book. I've tried. Personally she doesn't impress me as a writer. Unfortunately she's not going to stop writing, even when people aren't buying it. But that may just be me.)

That's too bad to hear.

I've read none of the books and I've seen only the first two movies. Do you recommend I read the books before seeing any more of the flicks, or does it matter?

Some of the movies won't make sense to you if you don't read the books Lamma.

I saw it with my sister who has not read any of the books and she had a million questions.

hmmm In general, I think the movies do a rather good job of capturing the essentials of the story. This is the first one where I think the omissions really stand out.

I thought they spent too much screen time on the love interests and not enough time on the memories of Dumbledore and the search for the horcruxes or the relationship between Dumbledore and Harry. To me, that's what was important about the book.

Also, the death of Dumbledore was major in the book, but in the movie it was kind of just a quick scene. I didn't see the rage that Harry felt towards Snape in the book on the screen. Or the utter devastation and resolve to fight till the death that was evident at the end of the book as compared to the movie ending.

I think that's why they are making the next book into 2 parts. That way in the first they can go back and rewrite Harry's anger and resolve.

Great points!!! tons of time were spent on the horcruxes in the book. It seemed to be a footnote in the movie.

also, Harry spent considerable time pining for his godfather in the book. Sirius is barely mentioned at all.
