Why Is It So Hard To Give A Cat His Meds?

My cat just came home from the vet's yesterday, and I have to give him a liquid medication (twice a day) to help clear up his urinary problems. Now, generally, my cat is very docile and sweet, but when you try to give him his meds, he turns into a wildcat! omg Growling, hissing, biting, scratching, etc. It's so bad that I have to have my dad come over twice day to help me. I feel bad about that, but what can I do? I certainly can't do it alone, not with the way my cat acts out. My mom says to me on the phone, "Your dad is not always going to be there to help you." rolleyes I told her, "Yes, I know that", but what am I supposed to do when the cat acts out and won't even let you come near him to give him the medicine that is supposed to help him to get better? I know it's not easy for the cat, but it's also not very easy on the people giving the cat its meds. I'll be so glad when it's over. rolleyes sigh
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

lol I would try that, but knowing the cat, he would smell it in his food, and refuse to eat.

that approach actually ALWAYS works with my cat. put it in something that's a treat, something you wouldn't usually give your cat. they'll gobble it right up.

Sneak up behind him, grab his legs and swing him around and when he's proper dizzy, shove it in his mouth.

I used to be good at shoving a tablet down my cat's throat boxed there was also a paste you could inject into the throat. My sister would help though, to hold the jaws open and then shut the mouth and massage the throat until they swallowed.

That's good that your cat will eat it like that, because mine won't. lol He's a stubborn little guy.

lol I would like to see that lady try to give my cat meds the way she did in the video. My cat would probably bite her hand, the same way he tries to bite my dad's hand. omg

I wish I could get better at giving my cat meds. sigh It does help to have someone open the cat's mouth, while the other gets the meds down the cat's throat. I tend to stroke the cat's throat too, to make sure he doesn't spit it back out again. giggle

nod It's very hard to medicate a sick cat. They seem to know what's going to happen, and they freak out on you.

nod an extra pair of hands or two always worked for me.

Not sure if this has been stated or not. But you could get your hands on a Pet Piller. We use them at our clinic all the time. You just grab your cats head with one hand and tilt his head up towards the ceiling which makes his lower jaw drop. Then with your other hand you get the pet piller ( which is plastic and small like a pencil with a rubber opening to place the pill) and slide that in and push the pill down the throat. Sounds horrible..but..rahter the cat bite the plastic then your fingers!!

Thanks for the tip, I do have a Pet Piller. Trouble is, the medicine I'm giving him is in liquid, not pill form. sad

Same rules apply, make sure you have a good hold on the cats jowls, and you should be fine. place yourself behind your cat so he cant back up, do small increments at a time smile Keep me posted!! smile

Thanks, will do. I probably will take the cat back to the vet's tomorrow, since he still is not doing well. sad Have to call the vet, see what she says, but I'm pretty sure she will want to see the cat again.
