Former Boxing Champ Arturo Gatti Found Dead in Brazil Hotel SAO PAULO — Officials say former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in northeastern Brazil.
A spokeswoman for the public safety department of Pernambuco state says the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered on Saturday morning in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas, where he arrived on Friday with his wife and one-year-old son. She said it was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died. "There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor," she said, adding that his wife and son were unhurt. The spokeswoman, who did not provide further details, declined to be identified because she was not authorized to comment on the case. Gatti retired in 2007. Damn, and I at least thought we'd get a whole week off from another celeb death. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

Gatti death: Lawyer asks for release of wife
at 13:41 on July 14, 2009, EDT. By Bradley Brooks, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RIO DE JANEIRO - The Brazilian wife of Montreal boxing champion Arturo Gatti - accused of strangling him with her purse strap as he slept - is asking to be released from jail, her lawyer said Tuesday. Celio Avelino told The Associated Press he petitioned a court to release Amanda Rodrigues while the investigation into Gatti's death continues. He expects the court in the northeastern city of Recife to rule Wednesday at the earliest. Rodrigues told investigators she awoke Saturday about 6 a.m. to find her husband's body in the apartment they rented in Porto de Galinhas, a seaside resort in Pernambuco state. She then called police - which Avelino said indicates her willingness to help authorities. But police said she is the only suspect in the crime, and that they are certain she murdered Gatti in their apartment where the pair and their 10-month-old son had arrived for a second honeymoon last week. The boy was unhurt and is in the care of Rodrigues' family. Police spokeswoman Milena Saraiva told the AP the murder may have even been premeditated, that Rodrigues may have encouraged Gatti to drink excessively so that she would be able to overpower him later. "He was very drunk and that made it easier for her," Saraiva said. "He was sleeping when she did this. She waited for the moment when he was drunk enough for her to do it." Saraiva underscored, however, that was just one theory police were considering. Rodrigues told police she had a fight with Gatti after dinner Friday night and he pushed her to the ground, resulting in minor injuries to her elbow and chin. Witnesses also reported to police the couple fought and that Gatti was drunk. Police said Gatti had marks on his throat, indicating he was strangled, and a knife wound to the back of his head. They displayed a bloodied, white purse strap that was found near Gatti's body, along with a small steak knife. Saraiva said she could not confirm if Gatti was first strangled and then cut with the knife, or the opposite. Meanwhile, those close to Gatti said they were still mystified as to how or why the apparent homicide took place - though they knew his relationship with Rodrigues was rocky. "What I've been hearing is that him and the girl fought a lot," said Buddy McGirt, Gatti's one-time trainer. "Whatever it is, it's crazy. If they fought that much, leave the person. You don't kill them or have someone else kill them." Former boxing champion Ray (Boom Boom) Mancini said he didn't know Rodrigues, but he knew Gatti, like many boxers, was prone to drink and party to excess. "You could see, a lot of guys are tortured, man, they live a lifestyle," Mancini said. "I don't know if it's them or how they think they're expected to act. But they all want that rock star life." ©The Canadian Press, 2009 Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! You gotta remember, most fighters are animals. It takes a different mentality to be a boxer. Much more than MMAers, so shut it UFC fans. | |
