Changing cute little toddlers to pre-teens in tight clothes with parted, wet lips isn't making them sexy? The new "Rainbow" designs look like something you'd see in so-called "teen" porn before the clothes come off.
[Edited 7/13/09 10:37am]

That's not really a problem of that design. It's a cartoon and nothing is revealing. And why can't lips be parted? All cartoons cant have a line for a mouth.

Is there a big difference in design? Yes.
Does it seem extreme or overly sexualized for a cartoon portraying a teen or aimed at the tween market. Not IMHO.

The problem lies in the people who find that to be a sexy look and something that belongs in porn IMO.
[Edited 7/13/09 10:55am]

But Rainbow Brite isn't a teen. She can't be. Clearly whoever thought up this jolly new design didn't do their homework. Rainbow Brite isn't a person, but a magic being, and so can't age. She's a little girl forever.

So not only is this stupid and unnecessary, but whoever designed it doesn't know shit about Rainbow.

I think what people are really taking issue with is that the new designs for Dora and Rainbow Brite are taller and thinner, rather than short and plump, not that they're sexualized (because they aren't).

Which makes sense if they're aiming at an older demographic than originally. Or if they're aiming at making them seem to be slightly older, so that they're in a "role model" position for little girls as they get older.

Took me a minute to figure out it's not that they're sexualized... they're just taller and thinner. Which is what happens to kids when they get older. They get taller and they lose the baby fat features.

Even if that's what people are getting upset about it irks me. lol

Cause, what are we supposed to do, make them gain weight and be chubby? We know that's not generally healthy, and many of us have struggled with weight (I know I was a fat kid and a fat teen). Why make that a "role model"?

All this PC crap has gotten so way out of hand. neutral

PC crap, my ass. It's impossible for Rainbow to be a teenager, so why draw her like one?

But they are making them to look like what kids that age look like. The bodies are age appropriate, the clothing is age appropriate and the new episodes are going to be geared to an older age bracket...I just don't get where this sexualized and inappropriate role models crap is coming from.

Also tho, "why can't children dolls look like children?"??

What kid pretends they're a kid when they play? confused
I always pretended I was older characters from tv. All the girls I knew pretended they were Charlie's Angels, Wonder Woman, Barbie (me too shhh).

I don't get this outrage over the characters being made to look older if done appropriately.

By that logic, then ban baby dolls, cuz lil girls shouldn't be pretending they popped one or two out. They grow up so fast, you know. neutral

Actually, I'd be for that. Mommy trainers are sick. Actually changing diapers and mopping the kitchen aren't fun, why the fuck are we giving little girls toys to teach them it's fun?

Check out the top left of the page beside the title banner, and the two Colour Kid dolls featured. I literally did a spit-take of my tea when I saw this bastardization. Why, in the name of all that is good and decent, did they make my childhood hero grownup and sexy?

mad

So they made her a teenager after 20 something years. Stop whining. lol

Except that Rainbow can't age, so the whole thing is stupid to begin with. On top of that, the new versions do look like little prosti-tots.

Parents in the crowd: Would you let your 12 year old daughters out in public with heavy makeup and tight dresses like these?

My daughter will be 16 in November and sadly, yes I have.
Her mother said it was normal and it wasn't as bad as some I've seen. I did make her wear tights under the dresses though. wink

That's my point. Many parents would not allow or if they did allow it, would not feel comfortable seeing their actual young teen daughters dressed the way these dolls and cartoon characters are, so why is it okay when the toys are?

Why is it cute when Dora and Bratz and an innapropriately-older Rainbow Brite wear makeup and tight clothes when the same thing in real live girls would be deemed inappropriate and too sexy?

I was in Sears the other day shopping in the girls' section (most womens' sizes are too big for me. Shut up. razz ) and they had padded training bras and thong underwear! And the smallest size available in the undies was a 6x. What in Christ's name are they thinking? barf

It's fucking ridiculous. disbelief

I tell you, it is HARD being a parent and trying to explain all these outside influences to our children. It is especially difficult showing our three girls just how much they are influenced by advertising to do the wrong thing.

Where is the heavy makeup and tight dresses in that picture?

Other than the fact that the new one has bare arms the outfit is almost identical.

The only change is she is older, taller.

I think it's totally fucked up that the character is even being compared to a Bratz doll or prosti-tot.

Girls are awesome. I should know, I am one. But all this crap floating around sometimes makes me hope I never have any daughters. That said, I really feel boys aren't educated nearly as much as they should about these sexualized images either. It's tough no matter who you're trying to raise, I guess.

Maybe I'll just be a crazy cat lady instead. sigh

and might i dare to ponder why males get to be called boys up until like 21 yet females get called women at age 15. this is some very sexist bullshit. not able to enjoy an innocent childhood without their self-esteem being challenged, sexualization at a young age, ongoing discrimination and objectification and still not earning as much as men.

Actually, I've noticed the reverse is true. Teen boys being referred to as young men, but teen and even adult women being referred to as girls or kids.
