I am buying a desktop next time. Laptops are great, but you really can't beat them up. I have to buy one every year.

I feel leaving the computer at home while away is nice... it consumes too much of our lives and I believe we don't live quite like we use to, before internet became the craze.

As incredibly convenient as it has been.

laptop!

i like being able to get out of the house when i know i'm going to be cooped up behind a computer for a long time, so it's really important for me to be able to take a laptop to the coffee shop. i guess i don't really need a lot on my computer - probably the most complex add-on software i currently have on my laptop is Nero - and i've gotten into the habit of storing all my mp3 files on an external hard drive...so as long as i keep my laptop hard drive clean and it keeps performing nice and fast for me, that's all i need.

i don't like desktops. they remind me of work. they feel like anchors.

I've had 3 laptops stolen so I'm in the habit of carrying mine everywhere I go now. They do not travel well.

I have both, but if I were forced to choose only one, it would be the desktop--bigger screen, more memory, more space, more durability. You can do a lot more with a desktop, I find.

really? cuz the most recent laptop i bought...which was hmmmm...going on a year and a half ago now, i think?...worked faster and had WAY more space than any desktop i'd ever owned. of course, i've never bought top of the line desktops and my most recent laptop is the first computer i've ever bought that wasn't the bargain basement no-frills model, so maybe i'm just experiencing for the first time what everyone's been taking for granted since the dawn of technology. lol

I'm with you.

I bought my laptop a few months before you (I think) and it's the best computer I've ever had. I'm sure there's better out there now. But I love what I've got.

our laptops are very similar. nod

as for my laptop getting banged up, i'm very confident when i schlep my laptop around, whether i'm just going to the coffee shop or traveling out of state. i carry it around in a backpack with a special compartment, and so far i've hardly even gotten a scratch on it.

It always seems to me that really good laptops are really expensive and you can spend less on a comparable desktop. But I'm also biased because of the work I do, which often requires me to putz around in InDesign and Photoshop and video editing things (even though I'm really not smart enough to use them well) while also keeping multiple other programs open. I know there are great laptops that can do all that, but I like the security of being able to attach extra drives to store all my music and all my work stuff. (Okay, and maybe there's an easily detached drive that has some fun stuff on it too.)

But don't listen to me. I cannot in good conscious say that I have any clue about computers. I just found a system I like and it works for me. shrug

I loved traveling to Europe with my laptop. Every day I would take hundred of pics with my digital camera, download the discs each evening and get rid of the lousy ones. Never had to worry about the number of pictures I could take.
And being able to go online . . . .
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

if you need a powerful computer then a desktop is better, for like rendering or gaming, but for internet stuff etc and the usual then a laptop is better.

Personally, I'm leaning towards getting a netbook myself. They're smaller and cheaper, and if you're just using it for internet stuff, they're really convenient. biggrin However, I really need a new desktop, but I'm tempted to wait until Thanksgiving/Black Friday to buy a new desktop. Not because I'm waiting for huge sales at Walmart, but because Windows 7 is scheduled for release this October. According to experts, Microsoft has finally fixed all of the bug issues which plagued Vista, and the new OS is finally comparable to Mac OSX plus the software is backwards compatible to WinXP.

Laptop.

With my macbook, I can go anywhere, and if there's an internet cafe or place with Internet, I can upload the pictures I took that day immediately.

This allows me to use one memory card for my camera, while freeing up space on it to reuse over and over again without having to worry.

Also, I can use skype to make phonecalls from remote places as long as there's an Internet connection. I called and talked to my sister in Germany yesterday and it cost me less than a dollar for 2.5 hours of the phonecall.

It's just much more versatile and convenient than a desktop (even though I own one of those too). You can take video, and with a laptop immediately edit the video...hell, you can plug it in and show those you're traveling with slideshows and movies of your day. It's very versatile.

The point of the technology is not that it controls you. nor that you're a slave to it. If that's the case, step away.

The point of the technology is that it enhances your overall experience. Make it work for you--not vice versa. And laptops are just more convenient that way.

If you do get a laptop though, get a mac for fucks sake.
