Why is there so little action during any given football game?

How long does a football game last from start to finish? About 3 1/2 hours or so, right? Maybe a bit longer in order to get in some extra advertisements and such for the networks...

How much time is spent with the player actually doing something other than just standing around? About 10 minutes or so... maybe 15 minutes if they are REALLY going at it.

How can you call that entertaining?

Edited: Carrie helped me with the actual length of football games. Thanks, Carrie! biggrin

Yeah, eh!

Hockey is an actual sport, as it involves actual physical activity.

Football has leaped in front of baseball as America's
past-time. It's America's Passion.
Baseball is the sport where too much time is wasted, IMO.

Also, you've got to take into account the amount of
betting that goes on in football games...bound to
make it more interesting.

See... I dig sports like boxing:

12 round championship fight
12 three-minute rounds
1 minute break between rounds
46 minutes from start to finish
36 minutes of physical activity

Ice I always hated football until I understood what was going on. It really is exciting and they're not just standing around. The games last for 3 1/2 hours and of course you'll get SOME boring games, but the majority of them are pretty good!

I bet if you take the time to learn everything you'll start to like it a little more. My exboyfriend who is the biggest wimp on earth always hated sports. He started watching football a little bit and now he's a big fan. If he can like it ANYONE can like it! lol

DOH!

The only real drama in football is seeing which player is going to be arrested for murder or drug offenses and how quickly they will get the charges reduced or dropped altogether so that they can continue to be exemplary citizens... another dramatic thing would be watching linemen go to a buffet and seeing how scared the buffet owner was that he would go bankrupt when those fat fucks left his establishment.

All I am saying is that these people get paid a hell of a lot to stand around most of the time.

It's all a matter of taste really. I think football is a lot more exciting than baseball, I don't like boxing and hockey puts me to sleep.

To each their own...

I'm not angry biggrin

I am all cuddly and happy like a little puppy dog, but I just don't understand the allure of football.

Could someone explain to me what makes football exciting, considering that there is so little athletic action in these long events?

Let me be generous and say that they engage in 15 minutes of physical activity... the games last 3 1/2 HOURS???

no no no! Ice!!

You probably catch the end of the games when they let the clock run out... I'm telling you, sit in a room with a bunch of jocks (gulp) and learn the game. You'll like it, I swear! It took me a looong time but it's my favorite now!

To answer your question, it is strategy. THAT's why. They are attempting to put together plays, which may or may not work. They have to discuss the play, make adjustments to it as necessary, decide which players are going to do what, etc.

It is a team sport, and that takes synchronization...they can't all be running around like chickens without heads (it seems that way sometimes) for 3 1/2 hours, they would collapse and die.

I don't like football either... I find it extremely boring.

I think they make way too much money for what they do, which is basically to provide entertainment... while others, who are doing much more meaningful jobs, get paid nothing in comparison.

I like sports, but I don't like events where guys stand around in tight pants and don't do anything for a long time and accidentally run every once in a while.

If strategy is the key, I could watch a chess match and see just about as much physical activity!
