Flip-flops seem to come in for a lot of hate - why?

I wear flip-flops most days. Probably 80% of the time my feet are shod it'll be with flip-flops. My feet are clean, my nails clipped and my flip-flops are similarly clean and well-kept. So why all the hatred?

Now don't get me wrong. Fashion-wise I couldn't personally go for sandals with socks, though I've seen it on many a European guy. With flip-flops and bare feet I find them fine from a fashion point of view and from a hygiene point of view.

Are flip-flop bashers just projecting? Do they assume their own poor hygiene must be shared by others, including flip-flop wearers, meaning an inevitable result of dirty feet being exposed in public? Doesn't it make sense in hot weather to wear them as opposed to closed toe shoes? Is that vanity to choose to wear less comfortable footwear?

I clean my flip-flops too. They're cheap, but that doesn't mean I can't keep them looking spick and span. smile

I understand this thread is undeniably shit, but what are your views on flip-flops?

Men or women...If ur feet are clean and look decent enough for flip flops, I see no problem with it.

But if u come outside and ur toes look like u stuck them in a meat grinder then set them on fire.... why would u do that to urself? disbelief

Because in most cases they just look inappropriate... and not everyone keeps their tootsies all shinin' like you... I've seen some rugged lookin' toe-meat in flippies and it's those we truly hate!!

Crocs are either the evolution of the flip-flop (to hide the nasty toe-meat) or the devolution of the clog (cuz wood is _____ ) shrug

In a hippy sort of way, I think people should wear whatever the heck makes them happy and not care what anyone thinks.

In a fashion kinda way, I think they're generally tacky and common.

There's genuine malice there, I can feel it. mad

I think they're stylish if you get the right ones. smile I see a pair I like and buy them in several colours. purse

And for women, there are plenty of flat, open-toed shoes that look very good. They're flip-flops in every way but maybe material. I mean, we don't have to be talking all rubbery and stuff here.

These are just like the kind I tend to buy:

In brown/beige, or black/white, or maybe navy/white.

I like 'em! Regular shoes are often just too hot to wear. I want to be comfortable. smile

No, he was wearing sports shoes (trainers). They looked hot and uncomfortable, possibly concealing athlete's foot or at least some pretty jacked up blisters. I mean, why else would someone wear shoes when it's 34 degrees celsius and 80% humidity outside? razz

Yeah! That's one for the flip-floppers, get in! lol

if they at least made some kind of absorbent foot pad that prevented that sound from happening, i could at least just avert my eyes from the flip-floppal region whenever someone feels the need to wear those items on THE TEMPLE THAT IS THEIR BODY. disbelief
