Wisdom Teeth

I just got mine removed yesterday. Hands down, it is the worst pain I have ever been in. Tell me your wisdom teeth removal stories.

About 10 years ago I went to the free clinic to have one removed and they didn't do a good job x-raying it. The root was wrapped around the bone and they had a terrible time getting it out. When I got home my mouth would not stop bleeding and my face was still numb and swollen beyound belief. I went to the hospital and they found out the dentist had broken my jawbone trying to get the tooth out. Long story it was a mess. disbelief

Had all 4 of mine removed when I was 33 yrs old. I waited so long because I thought it was going to be horrible. I had sinus and septoplasty surgery done about 6 months prior. I figured if I lived through that, the teeth would be a breeze.
I went to an maxillofacial oral surgeon and he was brilliant.
I was knocked out for the procedure, only took about 20 mins.

I do not remember the ride home even though I was told that I was talking while we were in the Walgreens drive thru getting my pain pills filled.
I came home, slept for 4 hours, woke up and felt fine.
A little discomfort that evening.
Took some otc pain pills, never touched the ones that I had filled at the pharmacy.
Done on Friday, back to work feeling fine on Monday.
I am hoping giving birth will be that easy but it is highly unlikely.

They had to break both my lower wisdoms to remove them. Each was cut in half and removed.

They also had to keep me awake so as not to dislocate my jawbone or do permanent damage.

I was sooooo damned high, I knew what they were doing, but just didn't care nor could I actually feel anything of course.

I recall it being a very minor healing process. I was eating burgers by 4 days even though I wasn't supposed to be lol

I'm happy with the removal of my wisdoms. I don't miss them being gone, and I don't have to worry about them causing problems as I age.

It really wasn't that bad at all.

I've just had one surgically removed a week ago, had to have bone removed and the sinus closed. Can't open my mouth very wide to yawn it pulls the sutures and makes it sore, but they will be removed in a week. My dentist refuses to remove the other wisdom teeth cause they're wrapped in the bone, and my insurance won't pay (partially) for it unless it's an emergency. Wish I would have had them removed when it was recommended when I was 19, so many problems dealing with them over years for no purpose.

yeah i've had them removed under local anaestetic. i felt what they were
doing but it didn't hurt. the sounds were very strange though, lol. the
hammering and breaking of teeth. ewww.

went home with painkillers but turned out to be allergic to them so the
first one i took, i was sick for about 3 hours, hurling and puking.

fcuz some of the stuff i hurled got locked in the wounds and the whole
damn thing went sceptic.

despite all that, and no painkillers i thought the pain was quite ok to
handle. i could sleep well and eat mashed foods.

after 2 days i looked like a squirrel stocking up for winter with two
huge portruding bags on either side of my face, pulsing with every
heartbeat as if they had a life of their own, lol.

i figured the only thing the doc would do was to open those puss sacks
and send me home so i spent half an hour in the bathroom and kept
hitting myself in the side of the face with my fist until the wounds
tore open and all the nasty shit inside poured out.

then i rinsed with mouthwash (now there was a pant wetting moment) and
after that all was ok. no more discomfort and everything quickly went
back to normal after that.

despite that horrible mess i was never in any real pain. but i've been
told i have a very high tolerance for pain anyway.

highfive

Had basically the same experience. It was about 15 years ago and my jaw is still fucked up from it. The dentist had to cut part of the gum to get it out and I remember having about 8 injections. The (big male) dentist spent about half an hour with his knee on my chest while trying to pull it out using all his weight while I'm staring bug eyed with tears streaming down. I'm sure the dental nurse assistant had a look of horror as he was yanking away. I was elephant man for about a week.
I've managed to live with the annoyance of having a jaw that locks and clicks badly everytime I open wide but every 6 months or so I get a terrible migraine in my temples from the constant tension because my jaw is not sitting right. I've tried a mouth plate to correct it, had a chiropractor look at it and went to a hospital about it but they haven't worked. I really, REALLY need to do something about it. Thanks for reminding me.

still have mine in. the only problem I have is biting the back of the side of my mouth. which hurts like all kinds of hell eek lol

I'd still like to have mine out tho but hearing painful stories really scares me boxed my sister once told me I'd better set the alarm clock no matter how annoying it is or how much I want to sleep, so I can take the pain medication back to back to back at every amount per x number of hours because waiting for them to kick in once they've worn off will be the worst thing in life confused

oh yeah and I guess I should mention i've also gone out with friends during the night while during the day they've had their wisdoms taken out... shrug they were perfectly fine.

I had mine out a couple of months ago and was terrified. I found that when you're scheduled to have your wisdom teeth out, the people who love(?) you can't wait to share all their horror stories and tell tales about how they'd rather give birth to gigantic mutant alien babies unmedicated through their nostrils a thousand times than ever have to endure the horror of wisdom tooth extraction again. I had put it off for years, but my mouth really hurt a lot since I was chewing up my jaw and I constantly had a very sore throat.

The oral surgeon gave me the option of IV sedation for which I was so very thankful. IV sedation dentistry rocks. It really does. I was lucid and the experience was not only less traumatic than I expected, but not even unpleasant. I was able to communicate, but I didn't feel a thing and even afterward my recovery was quick and not too terribly painful. I was given prescription pain meds, but never even needed them. I had horribly impacted wisdom teeth crowded into a too small mouth, so it was expected to be much worse than it was.

my wisdom teeth removal story is about how i still haven't had them removed even though the dentist told me to do it 13 years ago.

should have done it, because after years of braces, headgear, etc., i had perfect teeth. and now?

the wisdom teeth have thrown everything out of wack. and also pressed to the point where i have a broken molar on the top right and one on the bottom left that are going to have to be pulled. ugh. fortunately, the dentist who told me they'd have to be pulled said the wisdom teeth might slip in to fill the gap.

so.... if a dentist ever tells you to get your wisdom teeth pulled: DO IT.

Ok...the first time. I had the wisdom teeth on my left side removed. It didnt hurt at all. The only problem was at the time,I was trying to lose weight and I was on Nutrisystem. I didnt want to eat that crap. I was cranky and hungry,I wanted real food! I ordered a pizza and nibbled on it biggrin

The 2nd time..which was a few months ago. I had the wisdom teeth on my right side removed. It was horrible! They had trouble pulling them out. They yanked and pulled forever!!! My jaw felt like it split in half! I was so scared he broke my jaw! He cut my gums and they finally came out. eek

can't be as scary as not having them taken out. tumours, an infected jaw or jacked up teeth. and who wants braces at 30 or 40? eek

Thank you IstenSzek. The pain is more manageable but the swelling is terrible. Everyone keeps saying to me,"I don't remember swelling that bad."

All four of mine were impacted, with no tooth above the gums. The actual procedure was fine. I was put right out and the car ride home was fine as well but after the freezing was gone, no amount of codene could stop the pain. Today is a little bit better but still lots of swelling.

had all of mine out during the 2004 olympics. The bottom 2 were growing sideways and were going to impact the neighbouring teeth. They had to broken to be removed. Very swollen afterwards. I shook 4 ages after waking from the general anesthetic no way was i staying awake. And val child birth was a walk in the park compared to the pain of infection a week later disbelief i just had a molar removed and that was worse-probably coz i was awake and the tooth was infected
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret
