Disurbing Movie Thread....Watching SALO

watched Irreversible...I give it a 31/2 out of 5. Good movie..good story..was no action or real "story" after the beginning wich threw me off guard..and we never find out what happened at the bar after they spent so much time talking about it. The underground scene was definitley brutal, and enjoyable...the rest left me wanting more drama...they should have put the movie from beginning to end.

Im watching "Salo the 120 Days...." is very unnerving.....it's quite much in the speaking category wich is kind of boring to keep watching these ladies talk about their horrendous childhoods as if they are deeply immersed in it while playing the piano in the background...but the effects are omg . I had to stop after the "dinner" scene because it was getting to me I admit....I cant wait to watch the rest. Vwery unsettling. I keep wondering how come these kids just dont over power and kill them or run away..I'd rather be dead than stay through that. Some of the acting is a bit amateur wich takes some realism away.

Irreversible AND Salo...are you trying to mentally scar yourself for life??? lol

I've seen both. While I think Irreversible was a great piece of filmmaking, it's probably the most unpleasant film I've ever seen in my life. Welll, not including Spice World, but that's a different kind of torture.

I at least got some meaning from Salo. I think it's a very important movie in terms of having a strong message about class and entitlement. It's disturbing as hell, but it's disturbing for a reason. It's driving a point home and not pulling any punches. People don't like to acknowledge class issues and they don't like to claim any mea culpas if they have an inflated sense of entitlement. This movie farts in their faces (and that's putting it politely).

I had a bootleg video of "Salo" a while back, and was sooooo happy when Criterion rereleased it.

"Salo" may be the angriest film ever made. This was Pasolini's scream of anger and agony, and my God, is it ever potent.

I once showed this to a female friend, who to this day remains scarred by the dinner scene. Following that screening, every time I told her I'd be coming over with a DVD, she'd ask, "Does this movie have less feces in it?" smile

Right, so I've just found both of these movies and I'm gonna watch them 2morrow. From what U guys are saying I'm guessing that "Salo's" dinner scene is a bit "2 girls 1 cup" is it as bad or worse?... On second thought, don't answer that I'll find out when I watch it.

OK wish me luck. wink

I just watched Salo and OMG what a pile of shit (And I'm not just talking about the wedding feast) It was the most boring long winded piece of crap I've had the misfortune of sitting through in a looooong time, if ever.

I know it was done on a budget, I know they were trying 2 be shocking and I know that there were no Oscar winners in it but damn man, there is no excuse 4 that crap. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't disgusted or offended by it at all, I think that by now most of us have seen porn movies that make this film look like a Disney movie, I just thought it was boring and full of characters I really couldn't care less about. Or maybe that was the point, I don't know. Anyway I didn't like it.

I'm gonna watch "Irreversible" 2morrow, I'm hoping it's better. smile

I didnt get to watch the rest of it last night. Funny how we both rented the same flicks. I do admit..it is kind of long winded..and repetitive as the women tell those tales.....yeah they are nothing short of disgusting, but I'm not trying to sit there and read words while she prance around in circles for ten minutes.

Have you read the book: the 120 days of sodom by D.A.F. de Sade? This is what the movie was based on. The book is in no way meant to deal with the differences in classes etc, it is mainly de Sade's view as a libertine on that particular lifestyle and it's perversions and of course completely denying the existence of any god.. It's quite a job to read through...sitting through that movie is a piece of cake compared to the book. But it's very well written, gruesome and funny at the same time. He has a lot more books which are more pleasurable to read (although they all deal with the same subject)

"Salo" is a very tough movie, no doubt. But make no mistake about it--it's not just cheap shock value. Behind the filth is one of the biggest cinematic "fuck yous" ever filmed.

That's basically how I feel about it as well. Pasolini made a sick, twisted movie, but he knew what he wanted to say and he knew how he wanted to say it. I actually have a copy of the Criterion issue that I snagged at an outrageously reasonable price a few years back. I'm not sure it still has the same value as a rarity as it did when I bought it, but that's the only reason I'm holding on to it. I certainly don't have any desire to watch the movie again, though I don't regret having seen it.

As for Irreversible, I found it, outside of the shock scenes, kinda tedious. If I remember correctly, it came out when a lot of movies were cashing in on the Memento craze and doing irregular time lines: I recall thinking it was a slight rip-off as well.

I definitely think Memento is worth watching. It may not have the same impact now as it did at the time due to so many imitators having been released in the years since, but it certainly warrants a viewing.
