Are we in school? I have been lurking in the org for some time now and just recently joined and this is something that has bothered me.. what is up with some people who feel they have to correct everyone's spelling and grammar all the time?1?! Typos happen, i have longer nails and sometimes they hit the wrong key...people speak different languages, some people just arent good at spelling... Some people may be afraid of posting here because they will be ridiculed, we may be missing out on meeting alot of cool people just cuz they dont wanna be dogged on... Just let it go already, this isnt english class!! [Edited 6/26/09 6:25am] ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

Maybe if u took part u'd realise that we don't correct ppl to put them down,
at least not I... and most orgers understand this... some jus giggle and correct their mis-spellings. Don't think of us as actual ppl, but jus a name then maybe u may not take it personally. But then again, not everyone's the same. I don't feel insulted when someone corrects my spelling, which is hardly ever cause I hate to mis-spell but I do use 'short-hand internet language', like "u", "u've" etc and I don't always place "g" at the end of words that need it etc. If u show that it bothers u, then a few ppl will poke fun at u for takin it so seriously. Lemme tell u a secret ... If u make fun of your mistakes after someone else does, usually ppl stop being harsh and everyone jus has fun wit it Even though this is a virtual something, certain things that happen offline, out there, in the "real world", happens online also. I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

Hi JayJai..
It just seems theres alot of hate (maybe not hate but smugness is a better word, but it feels like hate) in the forums... Many people have commented on it but it just angered me this morning cuz i was over in music and more and they are so mean over there! Not everyone mind you, but there is such a smart ass vibe alot of the time...Im kinda scared to go in there lol... there was another org'er who called some guy out for jumpin all over someone for grammer so it wasnt done in fun it seemed like.. I know its not that big of a deal really but i tend to feel sorry for people... I usually for the underdog lol.. Thank you for the secret! I will try and remember that! p.s. i to use the "shorthand" when i type or do texting but i was scared to do it on here! Am I a chicken shit or what! Sheesh! ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

I do a million typo's, I am usually on the Org from work, and have multiple things going on, people walking in and out and the phone ringing. I'd go crazy if I was worried about my spelling and typo's.

Honestly, it IS the native English speakers who need to work on their grammar and punctuation. Most of the Orgers who speak the language only as a second or third tongue are near perfect. Typos can happen to anybody, but that doesn't excuse shoddy language skills.
Are we in school? No, but some of us should be sent back to do it over. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

on the one hand, this is an internet web site, and we're living in a culture where the way we text is the way we communicate in casual written language, so grammar and spelling is starting to give way to a whole new concept of written-word slang...so in a way, it's getting harder to "grade" people's online ramblings.
and also, we're not writing our senior thesis here. we can relax the editor side of our brains a little and post casually and conversationally. getting across what we're trying to say is more important than making sure we can bounce a quarter off the way we say it. on the OTHER hand, it never hurts to look over what you have written before you post it, and ask yourself if it's readable. it doesn't mean you have to catch every typo or undangle every participle...just make sure what you're putting out there is something we can decipher, is all!

... ok, so i'm finally BACK from my weeklong suspension (thanks mods! ) for "flaming", which i understand to be the unnecessary harassment of other forum members.
i figured this thread would be the most appropriate place for my comeback post [snip] personally, i don't trip on people's spelling as much as a lot of others here do. i find that to be petty and only being done for the sake of purposely being argumentative. [snip][snip] when i heckle someone on these forums, it's purely for comedy reasons. one cool thing about forums is that they can be whatever people want them to be. for some people, prince.org is a very serious medium for discussing the finer points of prince's music. some people see it as a chance to talk to others about spirituality, politics -- whatever. for me, these forums are a source of information about my favorite musician, but the PEOPLE on the forums make it entertaining -- to the point that, this is a comedy forum to me. [snip] NOW, back to my original point. i don't 'flame' people for their spelling, but i AM gonna say something if you're talking completely incoherently. there are certain posters on this forum , one in particular, that posts frequently, but rarely if ever makes any sense to anyone. i say something about it because it's funny, other people find it funny, and HOPEFULLY these crazy people on prince.org will realize they are in lala land and stop posting gibberish. to sum up this too-long post, a few emoticons [snip] .
