Personally I wouldn't pay over a thousand unless I was having a romantic getaway with the missus. In the islands you can get a two-floor place for under 2k and in Khao San there are decent rooms for 800 or less. But then, I used to stay in Lek Guesthouse on Khao San with shared bathroom, fan only and lots of roaches, for around 250 baht a night. Actually, I lived with Mon in the old Mango guesthouse for a month and our room was about a foot wider than a very slim single bed. Over-priced at effectively 67 baht a night.
