Restaurants on the Ropes: The Most Vulnerable Restaurant Chains

US News & World Report came out with a list of fast food and restaurant chains that are in danger of going belly up due to the deteriorating economy. Taking data from Standard & Poor's, the magazine isolated those companies that met two criteria: a credit rating of B or lower and a negative outlook.

Among their findings, these are the most vulnerable restaurant chains:

Perkins has been in trouble for awhile.

A shopping mall staple.

They kinda over saturated themselves in the market. They should close some operations and stay solvent.

Don't know this one.

Don't know this one.

Hopefully these companies will be able to make adjustments without closing down completely and putting more people out of work.

Hmm, only heard of Krispy Kreme and Sbarro. Only know of one Krispy Kreme, and I haven't been there in over a year, and I've never been to Sbarro, I think I've only seen it in a mall anyway, I'm not much of a mall foodie.

Krispy Kreme's been in trouble for a long time, now. They had a super shitty business plan. disbelief

All the ones that opened in my city died years ago! It was weird, they seemed like they were doing well, but then virtually overnight like 4 of them closed lol

I'd be a little bummed if Perkins went under.

It's the only pancake place we have around here.

Same here. I can't imagine those closing down EVERYWHERE, maybe some places.

What is Sbarro's problem?

I can see the problem with Krispy Kreme.

Krispy Kreme. The famed doughnut chain got too chubby over the last 15 years, and it’s been closing unprofitable stores to help reverse several years of steep losses. Revenue has plunged since 2005, but cutbacks helped the company turn a $1.9 million profit in the latest quarter. Lenders have provided a breather by easing some of their requirements over the last two years. The temporary reprieve expires in 2011. By then, the company hopes that streamlining, profitable new overseas stores, and other measures will have strengthened its finances.

Sbarro is your prototypical mall restaurant chain. Unfortunately, with a lot of enclosed malls dying out due to strip malls and big box stores, much of its customer base is being eroded.

So it's "the mall food court" that is dying?

Wow surprised to hear about Krispy Kremes apparently they are doing very well in Australia. I remember in 2006 when the first store opened in Melbourne the queue wait in store was about 3 hours and the 24 hour drive thru queue was a 2 hour wait for doughnuts.

Yea, but most (?) people are gonna hit that point when they realize they're going through a lot of hoopla over a damn donut lol & they'll look @ their waistlines & they'll wander away. If that's what's happened in America already, that's a good thing! biggrin
