Insurance Write-Offs!!!!

I know that this may b different in each country, but if u are in a car accident and the Police and Insurance Companies declare your car a write-off or a total(in the case of the US), is it against the Law to keep using the car, even if u get it repaired by another mechanic other than the Insurance Companys assigned mechanic??? I have had a very heated discussion with my parents about this!! They say No and I say Yes it is!!!

Any thoughts on this, please!!!!

Thanks!!! biggrin biggrin

Thew first step in the process is legally obtaining it from the insurance company. Talk to your agent that you are interested in it, there is usually a cost taken out of your settlement. I can only talk for US, and it is slightly different in each state but usually a tottaled vehicle needs to undergo a special inspection to be given a "restored" title and be considered safe for the street. Some states don't ever allow them back in use no matter what, but most do

Well i work in Home insurance in the UK, but i'd bet ultimately the law in your given state would have the final answer.

So if the police say no, i'd guess that's it.
