Does anybody know of any good data recovery services?

Since this thread was closed: http://prince.org/msg/100/311039

I'll pose the question on my own thread.

I'm looking for a service that can recover data from a crashed hard drive.
I'm primarily looking to restore my old music and picture folder off the hard drive, and I believe this is possible through one of these services.

If not, I'm going to go ahead and smash up the hard drive and discard it.

thx

try Data Rescue. it worked for my laptop. Bad thing is that it did not recover everything and some of my files were left corrupted. but of those files were of little importance. shrug

You can take it in to your local computer repair store and ask them you want data recovery. More than likely they should be able to recover your stuff and put it on a data dvd for you. Once on a data dvd just put the data dvd into your new computer and you can copy onto your new computer.

You could try TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

TestDisk is designed to recover partition tables once used on the hard drive. By doing so, you may be able to recover your old files as simply as copy/paste.

TestDisk Step by Step Guide- http://www.cgsecurity.org...ep_By_Step

and then there is Photorec- http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

PhotoRec is designed to recover all data on a hard drive. This can take several hours depending on the size of the drive, and will disregard file names & directory structures. This means that it will assign new, generic file names to all files recovered. Due to that, I suggest you first attempt recovery of the partition table with TestDisk. Use PhotoRec only if TestDisk isn't able to achieve what you need. Also, be sure that the the hard drive you recover data to has more free space than the entire size of the drive you're recovering from. Don't attempt recovery to/from the same physical hard drive.
