Where do you get that they are acting like they are 'all that'? So when Rolling Stone calls wanting to do a story on them they are supposed to be like, "No, sorry. I can't because I was just on a tv show"?

These kids did put in the work, and a lot of them have being doing their time on their own before this, working and waiting for their big break - which is really no different that artists in general.

So they might get more exposure than the struggling artist singing in seedy nightclubs and selling CDs from their cars because they fit into this nice cute little package that people prefer to see…but don’t hate them for that, that’s hardly fair - hate the buying public.

Winning a karaoke contest should be treated as it is. If someone's going to be a star they should have to have something more than a decent voice and days on end to take off work to stand in line.

I don't have a problem with singers doing songs they didn't write themselves, but shows like AI do nothing but foster the idea that all a good singer really has to do is phone it in, karaoke-style. They belt out songs like they all think they're Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey -even the guys -but rarely look like they believe what they're singing. I think I just really hate the soulless, emotionless style AI's helped make popular. And I cant fathom how or why anyone would fine it appealing to listen to,

Meow, just admit it, you are a music snob. I am too. But music snob acts don't sell records. They tour and perform all days of the year, but album sales? no way.

You can't get mad at someone that's been working on their craft and decides to do the show that has been losing significant audience share since '07.

AI didn't make that souless music popular, it already was. It's a new day in the business, and there are no funds for risks, record labels need guaranteed hit makers.

Like say for instance, I loved the Black Eyed Peas back in 1998. Then they remove the Black female and add a white chick, go commercial, and I am totally an abandoned fan. But I can't be mad at them. They had to do what they did to make record sales.

From a music snob to another, it's not that serious. It fills a niche.

Actually, you're not totally right with the old pros having no respect for it. In fact, the record business for those old pros was not much different than this show. Auditions, grooming by the label, singing songs they didn't write. That’s how it was from the 50s onward.

I simply do not get why these kids are being labeled talentless and not worthy of success. They have the same dream that other artists have to make it big, they just choose a different venue but that doesn't make them any less worthy at all.

I agree. Old pros unfortunately have to grab guaranteed hit makers. No room for risk.

Santana's album from a few years back rings a bell. The guy had to put newer flavour-of-the-month acts on his disc so people would actually buy it. Depressing. Even moreso when I realised that half the singles getting radio play were just being announced as "that Michelle Branch song" or "that Rob Thomas number"

Ruben did/does gospel. He just released an album. Perhaps pop wise he wasn't great, but the black charts liked him. Fantasia....well hell i don't know what she's doing, but her family is squandering her dough as fast as she is.

The girl that sings country, Carrie, is doing pretty well. The spin offs are too. Jordin Sparks had to stop touring for vocal chord surgery?

I mean, I don't even watch the show, but I'm aware of what the alum are doing n stuff. That Daughtry dude is doing pretty well too.

What the hell happened to Taylor Hicks? wink

Taylor Hicks is doing Broadway - Grease to be exact - which happens to be massive right now.

I believe he just dropped a new album, too.

I'm not a snob. I like Backstreet Boys. lol

But I hear what you're saying. Doesn't make it any easier to accept though that some seriously talented artists are being passed up for plastic tits and a cute hairstyle though.

There once was a certain prestige to a Rolling Stone cover.

Maybe some of us oldies romanticize it but it seemed that way. lol

Not a fan of Casiddidy but wasn't he a much bigger deal in comparison than La Lambert?

Again, I could just be romanticizing.

I did notice the similarity. lol

Cuz he was a star of the show for a while and a pop star as well.

I guess I'm not saying that "talent" is or should be the only criteria for a Rolling Stone cover, but it seems you can get one pretty quickly in your career nowadays.

My only counterpoint would be that fame seems to be more fleeting these days. If you wait for celebs to be in the spotlight for a few years before giving them the cover then you will only have the same handful of people on your covers over and over.

I hate AI, I've never watched a complete season (I have seen the open calls when all the bad people are shown) and I can name:

Clay Aiken
Jennifer Hudson
Tamika Gray

shrug

oh, and Carrie Underwood.

I adore this cover of David. The 70s had the teen idols du jour!

This was really big stuff back then cuz the show and the image was all about "family". There was no "People" mag and all these goss rags we have now, so people bought the image as given. He decided to undo that image. In that interview, he talked about groupies and smoking pot, so that was a major shocker back then.

This was kind of like when the Monkees did "Head". People were like eek . I think it's almost impossible to shock now like it was back then.

RS used to be about edgy people and issues back then. It was VERY counter culture. Once you get into the 80s forward, it became more mainstream. Back in the day, The Hills would have never cut the mustard cuz there's no edge there. Louise Lasser was hardly a "flavor of the month"...she was definitely on the counter culture tip. She was Woody Allen's wife and early muse. She did his early films pre Diane Keaton.
