falloff Some peoples scalps need it, some don't. wtf does "old school" have to do w/ anything?? lol I still do, I guess I'm old school geek

lol

What I meant by old school is that my Grandmother grew up greasing her scalp and so did my mom. My mom greased my scalp as I child, but I put a stop to it when I was old enough to say something about it. In my opinion...and it's only my opinion...greasing the scalp is very bad. Clogs the pores and causes so much dirt buildup. I don't know any stylist that would suggest the greasing of a scalp. I agree with PaintedLady that Coconut Oil is great for your hair, but I don't believe that any type of grease should be used on the scalp. Natural oil is very different and very beneficial.

Also, another great product line, PaintedLady, is KeraCare. I love their products! They have a great line for dry and itchy scalps.

My hair is naturally curly, though I normally straighten with a warm pressing comb. I agree that she needs to be taught the proper way to use the pressing comb, if she goes that route, because I burned many a hairs trying to teach myself at 11 years old lol

Smooches;)

There is nothing wrong with greasing the scalp. If the oil is light, their should not be a problem. Oiling the scalp can prevent dandruff and itchy scalp. It can also increase hair growth. If a person does have enough natural oils, then oiling the scalp will not cause any harm. A person just has to buy a light oil and not used too much of it. Depending on the texture of the hair some people have to do it everyday. Oiling the scalp is not old school. I can go to the store now and see tons of hair oils.

Yes, but you are talking about OILS neutral There is a difference between OILS and GREASE. Grease usually contains petroleum and minerals that clog the pores. NATURAL OILS are good for you hair and scalp, though I don't believe in coating the scalp.

If there is anyone out there GREASING their scalp everyday, their hair is probably stiff as a board and....greasy shake And they probably have lots buildup on their scalp...which is causing their hair to NOT grow. mad

I grease my hair everyday. It is not stiff, has no buildup , and my hair is long. I used a very light grease/oil.

Well, good for you, but if you truly feel you have to grease your scalp every single day, maybe you should save yourself the time and buy a better shampoo and conditioner whistling

I use very good shampoo and conditioner. My hair is very course , dry and long . I could not manage my hair without a very good shampoo and conditioner. My hair would break.
It takes no time to oil my scalp.

Thanks to all the responses! I did use the Coconut Oil as directed by painted lady. I did a light shampoo with only washing her scalp/roots, rinsed well, used SUNSILK De-Friz conditioner and combed it thru 1 section at a time then rinsed really well. This was the first time ever using this conditioner and it did good and smelled good, and is cheap smile. So while she was still in the tub, the coconut oil had been left out of the fridge for a few hours so it was still in the solid/melty form, I applied some to her roots/scalp then more to her whole head while massaging it all in. Her hair loved it and I did too! She stayed up a few hours later and I just left her hair down and she went to sleep with it like that. When she woke up it still looked great! I fixed it a little and made sure everything looked ok for the last day of school. She looked like something that stepped out of a magazine! She was definitely having a good hair day that day. It looked great all that day and even the next day when we went out I just added a little bit of water to her hair, no extra anything needed, and it still looked good so I left it down with a bow in it.

So far so good! I'm loving this and even bought my mom a jar of it, I don't know if she will use it or not but it is a great product. I haven't told her of my discovery as I'm waiting until she sees my daughter again and I will let her tell me! I want to see if she notices anything different about her hair or asked me what I used on it. She won't believe it. But I wanted to know: will using this about 3 times a week be ok for her hair/scalp? Would it be ok to use everyday? I don't want to over do it but everyone says to keep her hair moisturized everyday. Since this is Naural Coconut Oil, this will not harm her hair would it? And it would still be able to grow?

I do not know anything about Hot Tools/Hot Combs/Pressing tools etc. I had a bad experience with my straightening iron I used on my daughter for the first time this Easter. I wanted to do something special and different to her hair, so the night before I did a wash/cond./comb then that morning she woke up and I started on her hair. I sprayed it well with the heat protectant spray and used my generic CHI Iron I just bought at Sally's. I had used it on my hair a few times and it did really well so I was hoping my daughter's hair would have the same effect. We did it on the bed while she was watching a movie and I took it peice by piece and ran the iron thru it. Well half-way in between I had laid the iron on the bed and kept warning her how hot it was, she accidentally scooted over and leaned over or something and one of the plates scorched her arm. It left a long 2 inch scar after it finally healed over. It took me 90 minutes to do her hair completely and it didn't look silky straight like mine when I was done. It was straight but still had her same hair texture. It did make it a little bit longer but she so needed a haircut once I seen how dry her ends were so I took her outside and gave her a good trim. It really was not worth the 90 minutes I sat there doing her hair or worth the scar she has on her arm sad. I will never do that again, at least not for awhile. I have scarred my baby for life sad. So it's best for me to stay away from hot tools. We are both traumatized. Anyone suggest anything to help with the scar? I've been putting some scar cream I got from WalMart but I'm afraid when she stays in the sun this summer it will make it worse?

I will be doing her hair again tonight since Thursday, so I may just skip the shampoo this time, use the Sunsilk conditioner and do the same thing with it with the Coconut Oil. This simple routine may be all she needs right now so with continued use of that oil, would it make her hair better or improve it? I am sure this doesn't have any alcohol in it, so then it wouldn't dry her hair out, right? Also, would this be ok to use on my new baby's head after I have it, or should I wait awhile? I never know what kind of hair or texture it will have. Thank Ya very much for everyone's help smile

Can you post a picture of her hair after the coconut treatment? I am curious about this.

Was her hair curly. Does she have corkscrew curls? Is it similar to my daughter's hair? (see above picture)

Details, details.!

I am really curious about how you were able to let her sleep on her hair, and in the morning just a little water to refresh the curls. Did her hair look greasy? Was it frizzy? How did it not tangle or matt during her sleep?

Hi there! Absolutely I would be happy to help you and post some pics! I studied your daughter's picture, what a cutie and her hair looks good smile! Looks like she has soft loose curls? Does it get tangled a lot/easily? My daughter's hair kinda looks like this in that it is parted in the middle and she has never had any bangs, can't grow them I guess and we've never cut her any. With her hair, I don't know how bangs would look on her right now. After wash day when it gets all that TLC, she does have tiny spiral like curls, like ringlets, real tight curls. I call her my little poodle head, I say she was born with a perm smile!

Yes the first time I used the coconut oil as described last week, she went to bed about 4 hours after so her hair had time to air dry some and the oil gave it a sheen, like a glossy look, not really greasy I'd say. It took right to her hair and did really well. She slept with it all down without a head wrap or anything on her head. Then a few hours when I woke her up and get her ready for school, still looked good, didn't take no time to fix at all. But remember, her hair/scalp does not get greasy or oily ever but it doesn't flake or have dandruff so I'd say her scalp is normal. Just dry hair, that's probably why the coconut oil took right to it.

I will take some pics the next time I do this and post them, probably Sat. when I do her next hair wash day, that way her hair will be clean, fresh, conditioned, combed out and have the coconut oil in it. So I will post pics soon after to give you a good idea of her hair, texture, and the results of the coconut oil. I will try to get some pics right after I do it and then maybe later on in the day a few hours later to show what it looks like. But can anyone please tell me exaclty how to post pics on here? I've never done it before and I highly appreciate it smile!

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try the coconut oil. I washed my daughter's hair and used the Mixed chicks deep condition and shampoo and it combed out pretty easily. I only took 20- 25 minutes.. which is record time.. usually it is an hour and my girl is tenderheaded.

She hates wash day, so do I, even husband weighs in on the issue. Such conflict...about hair.

I can't cut her hair... I have been told when you cut her hair type.. the hair gets curlier like an Edith Bunker perm. The longer it gets the more it will lay down from the weight of her hair.

Her hair is down to her waist when wet, but when dried shrinks up to her shoulders... so that is a lot of hair bound up in that length.

That picture is 18 months old now. Her hair is thicker now. A scrunch can go around her ponytail only 2 times and it is really tight.. but one time is too looose.

I can't wait to see the pictures. Based on your experience I will get coconut oil. It is food grade right? Does it have consistency and appearance of lard?

To post your pictures, I would upload pictures on this free upload site:Image shack.com

Then you will get an web addy of where your picture is uploaded... then you can insert your addy on your reply post here on the Org.

Can't wait to see the pictures.. and I will post some as well.

I guess when you let the hair dry, you didn't mess with it until completely dry to maintain the curl pattern while drying.

I think that maybe key, but my daughter can't resist laying around or rolling on floor with kitty while her hair is still wet... so that is a problem as well.

In a few short years I won't have to comb her hair anymore. She will be maintaining it herself.

I did the wash/cond./coconut oil routine on Sat. I took 2 pics of her hair outside with the natural lighting so you can get a better view but that was at 8 PM. We went to WalMart and I was going to get pics when we got back to show what it looked like after being in a few hours but she feel asleep coming home and stayed with granny. The next day granny put her hair in a ponytail and I didn't want to take it down and take pics of it since it would look different from the first time 2 weeks ago when I did this routine, let her sleep with her down, wake up and fix it while it was still down before she went to school. It wouldn't have looked the same since it was in a pony all day. So I will be doing this again this week and take some good pics through out the day of it.

And yes my mom did notice the dramatical difference without me saying a word of my little secret! Like I said I did it Sat., we all went to WM, I had all her hair down again that night with a bow in it and my mom asked me the next day what did I put on her hair because she noticed it that night before. I said you wouldn't believe me if I told you smile! She guessed mayo, baby oil, lotion....I said nope it's 100% Pure Coconut Oil, that you buy in the food section. She was like WHAT?! So I told her what I did and said I have a jar for her and that she really needs to use this on her scalp/hair when she keeps her.

I don't know to compare this to lard because I don't use lard and don't remember seeing what it looks like but I do use this coconut oil when it is in soft/melty form, not the solid hard form. I guess to each is own and you have to try it to find out what works best for you and your daughter. But please remember this, when I did this that first time and my daughter's hair did air dry a little bit before she went to bed, the next day I noticed that it did leave a slight stain on my white pillowcase sad. I did laundry a few days later and it did not come out so now I know to either put a satin night cap on her head anytime the coconut oil is used or either let her sleep on that same white pillowcase since it is already stained. The good thing is this coconut oil does not have a strong smell that I noticed. But I got a huge jar thing of it beside the cooking oil at WalMart for $5.44 and this looks like it will last a LONG time, even if used everyday on her scalp/hair smile. I will post some pics this week and hopefully they will show up smile.

I'm glad things worked out and please buy a satin scarf/cap for you child so her hair won't be messed up and tangled. disbelief
Even though I am not biracial I understand how hard it is to work with hair trust me my mother is black and even she had a hard time with my hair growing up.

It should be fine, especially if you use a small amount. Just make sure you shampoo her her 2 or 3xs repeatedly each time you wash it to completely remove the oil residue before conditioning it.

Would it be ok to use everyday? I don't want to over do it but everyone says to keep her hair moisturized everyday. Since this is Naural Coconut Oil, this will not harm her hair would it? And it would still be able to grow?

Her hair will always grow, 1/2 inch per month. You just do what you can to keep it from breaking off at the ends so that her heir will maintain length. Everyday use of any oil is overkill.

So it's best for me to stay away from hot tools. We are both traumatized. Anyone suggest anything to help with the scar?

Neosporin or any bacitracin type ointment. hug So sorry that happened. I've been putting some scar cream I got from WalMart but I'm afraid when she stays in the sun this summer it will make it worse? No, she should heal quickly, just keep her wound clean.

I will be doing her hair again tonight since Thursday, so I may just skip the shampoo this time, use the Sunsilk conditioner and do the same thing with it with the Coconut Oil. This simple routine may be all she needs right now so with continued use of that oil, would it make her hair better or improve it?
Her hair texture will always be what it is, but the oil will make it more manageable and soft. Aim for soft hair, that means her hair will be well conditioned AND knot free.
I am sure this doesn't have any alcohol in it, so then it wouldn't dry her hair out, right? nod Also, would this be ok to use on my new baby's head after I have it, or should I wait awhile?
nod it should, but wait and see, the baby might not need it. If you breastfeed, I recommend you lotion your breasts with the oil to prevent chafing. And the baby will like the flavor. I never know what kind of hair or texture it will have. Thank Ya very much for everyone's help smile

I am glad the oil worked out well for you, sorry about for you baby's experience with the burn. I really want you to take her to a salon and be shown how to straighten her hair. That work is difficult to do, and takes lots of practice to learn.
That oil doesn't need refrigeration. But I kept mine's out for two months and it was fine. That oil keeps and doesn't ferment like the other types (olive, sesame, grape, fennel)

About your pillowcase, its an oil stain so hot water and dish detergent on the stain should get that out... that's IF the stain wasn't set in by the dryer.
sleeping with a satin bonnet is best for her, and you may want to braid her hair more often so that she doesn't have to walk around with a wet head often.
You can heat style with the oil in her hair, but I recommend adding it after you press and curl it.

Most curly hair takes 3 straightening processes in order to make it look silky straight. Blow dry, press, then hot curl. It's a lot of work, but that's how the pros do it. I recommend doing it this way with professional tools.
I get the best results this way. Again, its a LOT of work. whew
lol
