Anyone work at an ad agency? Or have any ideas bout what jobs mix creativity and writing? I'm at a loss.

long story short: trying to find a position ( as I wrote on a thread yesterday all 3 of us are not working) being creative and writing.

So...I thought why not copywriting but I am not sure how to get my foot in the door ( other than the approx. $1500 Australian Federation Advertising starter course fee which i cannot afford).

Info about me: uni student studying a B.A in language ( italian) and next yr will add to that a B.A in language ( French).

Do they do internships in Australia? Do some research into what companies in your area have marketing departments and check to see if they offer any summer internships.

I'm a senior copywriter for a multibillion dollar company in the States. But I did a lot of things before I landed here, including working as a journalist and press secretary.

Being a good copywriter takes more than just an ability to put words together. It's all about selling something.

Genesia, hi. They do and I've rung and no one has openings right now. Right I agree with you, anyone can string a sentence together.

I know I can't just jump from uni to A but I honestly don't know what to do as a starting point.....kinda lost

Do you have any networking possibilities? Check with your school - very often, advertising federations offer a student membership at a greatly reduced price. You don't have to take any classes or anything. Just join, go to their events and meet people.

No I don't know anyone that I could ask/works at or with an ad agency. I will look into that.

I'm not saying this will help get your foot in the door, or even what doors or feet it might apply to, but it certainly couldn't hurt :

Start blogging.

If you can write creatively then do so, and share it. Companies are beginning (slowly) to take note of bloggers.

This guy Damien Mulley landed himself a job as a journalist from writing his blog - and they came looking for him. I haven't read all of his blogs (they go back to 2003) so I don't want to be unfair to him - but to be honest, from what I have read, he's not that great a writer - I would even consider myself to be a better writer.

That he has landed a job because of it is great, and it makes be believe that anyone with a bit of creative ability should get blogging.

I'm actually considering starting to blog myself. I've avoided doing so up to now as I believe it to be something of an ego-massaging excercise. However, if it'll get me a job, what've I got to lose.

Ok, this is cool. To be honest I've never really thought of it as being a "serious" writing form but even the bigwigs do it Anderson Cooper etc.

nod right! Not gonna hurt to try! So how does one get a blog? I've got a bit of money now to get my site up and running again so I can link to that eventually.

Thanks hun
