It had to grow on me. What I gathered was that the character played by Hugh was a scientist with a wife suffering from a rare and fatal form of cancer. She wrote a book, lovestory, of a quest by a soldier on behalf of his queen/lover to find the fountain of youth and eternal life. There is a third underlying storyline in which the soldier finds the tree of life and travels through time to save the woman he loves but the tree slowly dies. The message being that nothing, not even love, truly lasts forever. All we have is now. I like the flick now. I wish I had access to such a tree. Some cultures believe there is one. The tree of life from the bible and all. Heck why not. Anything is possible right?

Gorgeous visuals, a bit difficult to wrap my head around, though. I think I'd have to watch it once or twice more to really give an interpretation (Desiree's is good, though lol)

I only saw it once and feel like I need to watch it at least one more time. The movie is really one of a kind, I have never seen anything quite like it. So incredibly beautiful, deep and different. Very interesting interpretation Des! At first I didn't get why the tree of life had hair... but when I saw how the tree and woman died at the same time I figured it out. Oh I really need to see it again . [Edited 6/9/09 5:00am]

One of my favourite films - I've seen it many times.
The visuals are stunning and the music is haunting. To my mind it's a love story with no time boundaries, past present and future all rolled into one so I don't beleived that the future projection is imagined. To my mind when Hugh Jackman's character acknowledges that he will die is when he is finally liberated to complete the cycle of death/rebirth. Is there anybody else who has slightly mysterious bruises?

Hugh and Rachel made for a stunning couple. How come beautiful people don't hook up more often? Meanwhile ugly couples spitting babies out like they were popcorn.
