Highest grossing films of all time (USA). No 1 is not obvious! http://www.boxofficemojo....justed.htm
1 Gone with the Wind MGM $1,450,680,400 $198,676,459 1939^
2 Star Wars Fox $1,278,898,700 $460,998,007 1977^ 3 The Sound of Music Fox $1,022,542,400 $158,671,368 1965 4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Uni. $1,018,514,100 $435,110,554 1982^ 5 The Ten Commandments Par. $940,580,000 $65,500,000 1956 6 Titanic Par. $921,523,500 $600,788,188 1997 7 Jaws Uni. $919,605,900 $260,000,000 1975 8 Doctor Zhivago MGM $891,292,600 $111,721,910 1965 9 The Exorcist WB $793,883,100 $232,671,011 1973^ 10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Dis. $782,620,000 $184,925,486 1937^ Amazing that a film so old is still the highest grossing. I remember talking to some geeky fanboy of Spiderman and him saying how Spiderman 2 was one of the most sucsessful films ever blah blah blah, but you should think about inflation. As the website notes, "Gone with the wind" "Star Wars" and inparticular, "snow white..." and any old Disney movie you see on the list, did get re-issued into cinema's, often more then once, which do add up the tally somewhat. It is to Disney's credit this use to happen though, as they are, aswell as a few non Disney films like "Gone with the wind", the only ones who are able to do this. Since VHS though of course, this no longer happens. Good to see "dr zhivago" in the top 10. Critics didn't like it at the time but I think its a great film. Had no idea it was so sucsessful though.

The $$ grosses are also inflation adjusted as if they'd all been released the same year. So older movies have more runs, and get a bigger inflationary boost. [Edited 6/4/09 22:38pm] I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

That is not true. Gone With the Wind was re-issued to theaters for its 60th anniversary in 1999. I know - I saw it in a theatre that year (and a couple times since). One of the art cinemas in the city I live in (which has closed, sadly) regularly screened classic films. In the last 10 years, I got to see It Happened One Night, Meet Me in St. Louis, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and many other films on the big screen. It is always a treat. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

#1 thought 5 are obvious because they've been in constant circulation and even when shown on TV they generate money. I thought however, Ten Commandments would have beat out Star Wars.

We have the Tampa Theatre here, which was just awarded historic landmark status. I've seen "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D and took mom to see "The Wizard of Oz" among many others. It has a Wurlitzer organ that comes up from under the stage. Totally awesome!

Ok, art cinema releases don't count LOL. I like "it happened one night" 9one with Clark Gable right?). "meet in in st louis" is not really my thing, and "mr smith goes to washington" looks pretty dated now unfortunately. James Stewart makes it watchable, but the ending is so over the top LOL

I have never seen all of GWTW.
I saw a little of the Ten Commandments, and Moses was absolutely hilarious. A real nutter, that one! My Legacy
