See a doctor!
Oddly enough my physical therapist says to ice a sore back is better. Heat draws fluid to the injured area and increases the swelling. Cold drives fluid away and reduces swelling. You should also take an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen for a few days and be sure to take it regularly to keep the level of medicine in your system at the right level. I'd nix the heat though. How do I know all this? I've just spent the past 5 weeks recovering from an upper lumbar injury...
