The biggest thing I hate spending money on are property taxes. I live in an apartment-style condo, with a backyard that is considered "common area" (meaning anyone can use it). I pay somewhere around $1,500 per year for property taxes for "property" that is not really mine. Can anybody say "rip off"? It really gets me mad when I get that bill twice a year, because I think of how, if I were to spend just a couple hundred more dollars per year, I could have my own house with my own back yard (no sharing). If I weren't so damn poor, I would move from here, but unfortunately, with my current financial situation, I can't see that happening anytime soon. I'm stuck here. sigh
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I have been car free almost a year and loving it woot!

Me too! woot!

And same story as you, it was more to fix than it was worth and it happened at the height of the extreme gas prices last summer.

I may own a car again in the future, but I absolutely LOVE getting by without one.

My two cats got seriously ill at the same time. In the last two weeks I have spent about $3000 and they are not finished with me yet. They are not ready to be put to sleep but I don't know how much more debt I am willing to get into. They make it really hard for people to keep pets.

sad I feel you on that. nod Last winter, one of my cats got really sick, and had to have an operation. I wound up spending close to $1,500 between the operation, medications, phone consultations, boarding, etc. I hope your cats get well soon. It sux having a sick pet that needs medical care. hug

Thank you. They are both still sick and I see no end in sight. It has really gotten me down.

At first, I thought it was a handicap. Then I depended on the boyfriend to get around -- which became annoying. But the longer I go without a car of my own, the more and more I like it. I give myself a transportation allowance so I don't worry about spending $25 to go for a hike, for instance. Because, in the long run, I save money, I am safer, and I'm not depleting the world's resources.

Property taxes aren't fun. But I do like having that deduction on my federal income taxes - especially now.

I own a two-bedroom condo and my property taxes are close to four grand a year.

4 grand a year for property taxes - wow! eyepop I didn't know you would deduct your property taxes from your income taxes. I'm not sure if I can do that here in Ohio, but I need to look into it. hmmm

You can do it anywhere. It's part of the federal tax code. Property taxes are deductible on property you own, just like mortgage interest and state taxes.

It you own property and aren't itemizing your deductions on your federal taxes (just taking the standard deduction), you are paying way too much federal tax.
