How do you deal with depression? I have been for a little over a month now. I have noticed that my way of dealing with it is food, ice cream in perticular. I know that I have gained a good amount of weight,I just don't seem to care. I am going to go,and see if I can get MediCal,and then make an appointment with my doctor to see about getting onto some anti-depressants.
So how do you deal? Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach

I agree with all the advice so far.
I'd only add that while I've nothing against medicines (I have a depression diagnosis, myself, for which I'm treated with a low to moderate dose of an antidepressant), it could be possible that you'd benefit from simple talk therapy and a few lifestyle adjustments. Do some late spring cleaning, get outside, take up that hobby that you've never gotten around to, etc. Could help tremendously! If you need a drug prescription, let that be only part of your treatment. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

When a person is depressed- they usually don't eat...Get "depression" out of your mind because you are not! Do something nice for yourself. Get a message, go to church, go visit someone, go shopping, get a new look! You just need some ME time and the only one who knows what you need is YOU! Um... let me warm up my vocals

I have occassional bouts of depression, (not serious clinical depression, just bouts of being down in the dumps), and interestingly I find myself playing sad/melancholy music. I actually burned a CD with songs that I find "haunting" like Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" and Prince's "There Is Lonely" (even Guns-n-Roses' "November Rain" is in there)...and I find it soothing.
Weird huh? You'd think I'd be listening to C+C Music Factory instead to try to cheer up! By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

That is dumb shit. Some depressed people lose their appetites; some depressed people overeat in an attempt to make themselves feel better. You're gonna tell him/her she's not depressed because he/she's eating?

You're gonna tell him/her she's not depressed because he/she's eating? Don't be mad at Angelic...I think that depression is a relative term. Clinical depression is one thing (and probably what Angelic was referring to)...but when you're just "depressed" as in feeling down & dejected, then you deal with it in your own way. My wife, for example, goes SHOPPING. Seriously...buying something; a handbag, a lamp, a pair of jeans...can lift her spirit. And can I tell you...when we're having money problems, we go OUT to eat (Appleby's or Friendly's or something) and it makes up feel better. [of course, if we stopped eating out so godamned much then we wouldn;t be HAVING so many money problems to begin with!!!!!] c'est la vie By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Any marked change in eating, sleeping or sexual habits can be a symptom. Sleeping a lot more than usual can be a sign for some people; for others, clinical depression can manifest in insomnia. It's the change that's important, not necessarily the direction the change takes.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Depression runs in my family Angelic,so I know that I am. Mine is a result of my life as I have know it falling apart. I lost my uncle,my job of 16 years, and now I might be losing my home, and all I can seem to focus on is all this stuff,I completely had the rug pulled out from under me,and I am left with this fear, and feeling of "What the hell do I do now?" I signed up for Medical Trancription classes, and I can't even focus to work on that. I am still amazed at how in one weeks time,my life could turn into such utter crap. It's like I had it all (well almost),and now it's gone.

I would handle depression a lot different, but I am a optimist & I always have though that if u can turn the negativity into posetivity that every thing gonna be allright.
Depression is not only eating or not eating, some people cut them self to feel better. For those is it a drug like for other is food a drug. I would say stay Spiritual open for everything and listen 2 Have a Talk To God by Stevie Wonder, meditate to it, pick up the things in the music. and search something that u can destract your Attention, not only 2 food, write your feelings down, talk to someone that u trust and that u know he/she gonna support u in every single way. And most important thing don´t hide urself at ur home go outside. Btw Anti Depressive are bad tho, they don´t gonna help u getting out the depression, they gonna let u feel better, but that isn´t the solution to ur problems. Depression is not something physical but spritual. Just stay true with everything around u, and stay strong even if it is a difficult situation. God Bless ya hunny & May the light be with you! OK Ive lived with it for the past 20 years , first off see a doctor , seriously you need to do that , go speak to someone and although medication isnt the miracle cure people think it is sometimes thats a good short term route to take .
Keep busy , distract yourself from your thoughts if you can . Exersize really does help and eat healthy If things get bad at night and anxiety is worse then , read , it sounds dumb but it is a distraction

I agree with many about going to seek help. There are many different ways to deal with depression, and you and a Dr. need to find what works for you. Whether it's in the form of a pill, or just counseling, or a combo of both. But I will say, you can overcome this, I know it seems hard now, but it's possible. I have dealt with depression since I was 6, and I refuse to let it beat me. Keep your head up, look around you and try your best to find the good in your life. I know it's not easy, but try. I will say this, the fact you know what you have, and you are willing to seek help, shows that you have the power to fight this. I will be thinking of you, and if you ever need to just talk...I am an orgnote away. Proud Memaw to Seyhan Olivia Christine ,Zoey Cirilo Jaylee & Ellie Abigail Lillian

thank you all for listening, and your suggestions. It's stunning, eh? What you've described here is classic of one who is displaying depressive symptoms, and it's occasionally tough to discern whether what has happened to you -- barring your uncle's death, which is completely beyond you -- is in some part causal, in some part the fallout of a depressive cycle, or (most likely) both. In California you have several choices of whom to see. A safe, clean route is to seek out a counselor who is a current member of the American Counseling Association, or a psychologist who is a current member of the American Psychological Association. Both must be state licensed for clinical practice. (And you can ask to see their credentials.) Either can assess you. Your symptoms may very well be situational and pass rather quickly, in which case a formal diagnosis may or may not be necessary. If what you present seems to be more severe or long-term, a formal diagnosis is more likely warranted, in which case your professional will either see fit to administer talking therapy alone, or treat you and also refer you to a state-licensed psychiatrist, the only professional you should accept a drug prescription from. (i.e., be more cautious of taking one from your general practitioner or family doctor.) Through all this, make sure you advocate for yourself. If you feel a certain course of therapy is or isn't helping you -- or if you have certain feelings about medications -- say so. Any professional worth his/her salt will be sensitive to your needs and clarify everything. It's good you're seeking help. [Edited 6/8/09 7:09am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
