http://www.nhlbisupport.c.../bmi-m.htm BMI Categories: Underweight = <18.5 Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 Overweight = 25-29.9 Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater I get a 24 (just in on normal) and look much more overweight than the overweight people in those photos That's why I find it so interesting, though. It lists their heights and weights, so you could calculate the bmi yourself. So either the bmi chart is inaccurate (though it's what is widely accepted) or we are just getting bigger as a population so our perception of "normal" has changed. The BMI chart is quite general and as individuals body shapes do differ and how and where fat is stored results will vary. Obesity is a growing problem and as you state has become a 'normal' way of living even with the risks it poses in due course. Losing weight is not just about crash diets, weight management is an entire lifestyle change that must be adhered to otherwise the weight will be stacked on again.

http://www.flickr.com/pho...19/detail/ I think it was particularly interesting to me because as some of you know (as I've posted about here before) I have a body image distortion thing going on in my head, wherein what I see in the mirror and what I see in pictures of me are two different things. This has ranged from thinking I was severely overweight when I wasn't, to not seeing how much weight I was carrying around when I have been overweight. To this day, I hate pictures of me. I have an idealized notion of what I look like in my head and when I see pics that don't match what I "see" in the mirror I get depressed. I no longer allow photos to be taken of me - no joke. I let sirpsycho take them in nyc the other weekend as it was a fun opportunity but those are the only pics taken of me in about 6 months and I have no plans to allow any in the future. I have had people tell me that surely I'm not "obese" (but I am), and while I assume folks say that just to be nice (lol) I think maybe many of us are getting more and more used to overweight being the norm, so much so that we don't see it as being overweight anymore. What do you guys think? I can relate to you on that Carrie, on all that you mentioned.

What do you guys think? I thought some of the classifications were off. some overweight looked fine. Some overweight looked obese. Some Obese looked overweight and none of the underweights (what I saw) were out of control I know how you feel about pictures. I only pose on one side if possible because I look in the mirror and think gee, I'm cute! then see pictures and can't believe what a monster I am on camera 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

It's interesting. I think of myself as having a pretty realistic body image, but when I look at those pictures, the people who I look at and think, "that person is my size" are actually about 50lbs heavier than me.
My BMI puts me in the "morbidly obese" category. I'm a fat girl, no doubt, but I'm also relatively active and muscular. Healthy, certainly. BMI is a stupid measure of health. "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?"
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
BMI is really odd because it distorts the results for people who have a lot of muscle, particularly men. And it doesn't work equally well for all body types, so people who in reality are at an okay weight for their bodies can be labeled overweight, even though they really don't need to lose weight.
I think Americans have an incredibly poor understanding of and education about nutrition and fitness. And the things we turn to as guides perpetuate the misunderstanding.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
As a general rule not all people fit into the BMI standard well, there are exceptions, but BMI is a universally accepted measuring system by physicians and dietists worldwide. It's also misunderstanding to believe that for example men with lots of muscles, who do not fit BMI well, are "healthy" just because of having lots of muscles and that the BMI standard does not apply to them. Too many muscles and what the man must do to get and keep them and what the body has to endure over time to carry them, can also be an unhealthy thing. Moreover BMI does take into account that there can be variations in body types by keeping a wide margin of what is generally considered healthy or unhealthy, corraborated by over time proven facts, that people with substantial overweight or substantial underweight generally suffer more health problems than those with normal weight do.

For example, a lot of the women in those pictures who seem to be unreasonably labeled 'overweight' have big tits, which throw off the BMI. "What's 'non-sequitur' mean? Do I look it up in a Fag-to-English dictionary?"
