or that you walk around a lot more while travelling

I noticed this in Wales and England. In Wales they walk everywhere despite the shit weather. I mean, it's nothing for them to walk 2 or 3 miles into downtown Cardiff to go drinking, then walk 2 or 3 miles back AFTER dancing for a few hours.

In London, to take advantage of the subway, you're still walking around like mad in a crazy rush. You can't avoid walking in the UK.

I wonder if New Yorkers who use public transport and walk alot have lower rates of obesity. hmmm

I thought about that when I was in NYC too as I was walking EVERYWHERE. (I allowed myself to splurge on yummy food thinking the walking would take care of it and came home half a pound heavier. mad )
But I take public transportation here at home. I really don't walk all that much unless I make an effort to, the bus lines are so damn convenient. I was walking so much in NYC cause I was trying to see everything, take the city in, etc.. At home, it's all about the fastest route to every where you want to go, work, the store and so on.
I make a point to walk to the grocery store or if I'm meeting friends uptown and such now. But I could totally get by without much at all.

Holy fucking shit, I had a theory about that after watcing Germans gorge themselves on yager snitzel, brotworst, beer, and whole milk yogurt day after day. lol

NONE of their food over their has perservatives... Not even their beer. It's not allowed.

I was trying to figure out why they stay so much thinner than Americans. And I don't mean thin like as in skinny or wafish like runway models, but thin as in healthy looking.

My sis and I actually thought maybe it had something to do with preservatives and hormones. Bill Mayer once said he refuses to eat anything in American Grocery stores, and he gets all his food from Organic grocers, because what we're being told is food isn't really. lol

But I also notice, they walk alot more than we do, and they bicycle on weekends just for fun. All the little things add up.

Have you ever read the China study? It's a book that was published a while back. Asians consume , per body weight, more calories than Americans on average, but weight less. They think there's a link between that and animal consumption. I'm not totally convinced about this, though I do know Thai people can eat all day long and never get fat--I've watched my family in Thailand do it. At issue is that Europeans are veracious meat eaters compared to us in the states... And they're still much thinner.

My current strategy is to treat it as a calories game. It's impossible if you're eating 400-500 calories a day less than your body needs to maintain itself, to NOT loose weight. So as painful as it is, I'm just counting calories. I don't want to go on 3 years of this. I've lost my beautiful, pert, ass, and need to get it back.

I honestly believe there is a connection between preservatives and hormones and the like in the American diet.

This may help explain why when I went RAW vegan, I was dropping a pound a day almost despite eating as much as I wanted. I mean, I was eating raw almond icecream with coconut, etc. etc.
But the vast majority of it was Organic, and not having hormone laden meats in my diet may have helped.
Either way, I can't wait to go back to it. I felt like a million bucks after a few weeks.

I saw loads of obese folks in Vegas thought omfg
Stockholm very few overweight folks, but in Southern Sweden where you have to drive around due to bigger distances, I saw many.
Melbourne Australia, outer burbs, quite a few! My son's school - quite a skinny bunch thanks to their tremendous efforts in health and nutrition education clapping

Right? NY walks far more... Vegas contains so many folks from all over its hard to say where they are from. By far the heaviest folks I have seen are from the Southern states. I mean to say, in Memphis I stared at the 2 thin people that walked by because they were an anomaly. Then I ate there food. Holy Lord above, best cooking I ever had but if you didn't specify you wanted your salad to be served in a natural state, they found a way to fry it and present it.
Well look whom I found dipping their toe in the murky waters! :eyeroll: At least offer me a damn cup of coffee!

When you quit smoking, did you put on weight?
Many of my friends claim they put on weight after quitting smoking.

Back in '99 when I quit, I didn't notice any weight difference at all. But then again, quitting smoking increased my endurance while running and at the gym, so it may have actually helped.

I quit in mid August and put on about 20-ish pounds by the end of November and maintained that till mid-March of this year when I started doing something about it. I'm just now fitting back into the clothes I wore last summer before I quit.

this new yum cha restaurant opened in my suburb on Saturday, and we ate there yesterday, and it will be interesting to see how they tailor it to the local demographic of young healthy living families. After we'd declines the 10th dish, the waitress nodded and asked "too much fried, huh?" and brought us some chinese broccoli with oyster sauce drool

Absolutely. There's no way I'd have gained 20 pounds in 3 months if I hadn't quit.
When I tried to quit in 2006 I gained 10 pounds the first 2 weeks and that's when I'd just lost 40 pounds. I freaked out and eventually started smoking again, but the damage was done.

I wish they'd legalize ephedrine again.

I lose weight so quickly on that stuff falloff falloff falloff

I'm have an unhealthy fixation with having a large chest and shoulders. So as I lose weight, all of me is shrinking to include chest and shoulders. I think my body image or the way I see myself is unhealthy, it's keeping me motivated to keep exercising at least. sigh

I'm going to agree with Karen. In Alabama, there are A LOT of obese people. Everywhere. The odd thing is that where I grew up, there are now bicycle lanes, and parks with running trails everywhere you look. And there are always people utilizing them.

Actually, I think you're right.

Whenever I have to go to city hall to get my drivers license and such, sitting down in the lounge and waiting for my number to be called is always scary as hell. FREAKS come crawling out of the woodwork.

The whole notion of BMI isn't a very good indicator of how healthy someone really is. Take for example you have a person who isn't very tall but is incredibly muscular and has no fat at all, but because of muscle weighing more than fat if they were to get a BMI done on them they would come out as overweight or obese when in fact they aren't.

Don't get me wrong it can be a good indicator for more normal people who aren't body builders or professional athletes. Its just a flawed system because it doesn't take into account muscle or body type.
