Ant-Bitten Baby Found Abandoned In Ocala
Posted: 9:25 pm EDT May 30, 2009

OCALA, Fla. -- Ocala police are working to find the parents of a baby girl who was found abandoned on the side of the road.

A driver called police after finding the infant in a Q-V-C box near Northwest 17th Street and Northwest 24th Avenue earlier Saturday night.

The infant, who may be a week old or younger, was bitten by ants while she laid in the cardboard box.

Authorities say she was also hungry.

Amazingly, the infant is doing okay.

Doctors are observing the baby at Munroe Regional.

That's terrible! How can someone leave a tiny baby on the side of the road, and not care what may happen to it? disbelief Some folks need to get their rights to be a parent taken away. disbelief

It's heart wrenching and senseless. In Florida we have a safe haven law...parents can leave a baby at any fire station or similar location with no repercussions. It's totally unnecessary for someone to do this!

That poor child! This is an awful situation...but I have to wonder why did her parents do that? Was it because they couldn't feed her? Was it a teenage Mom to scared to tell her family? Either way it was the wrong thing to do. There are so many other ways to handle this situation. Local fire houses, hospitals, police stations. I just hope the child will find a good and loving home, and the parents who did this find peace in their choice. My heart goes out to them all.

this reminds me of the news story from last week about a 5 yr old girl in
russia who was rescued from a house where she had been locked in a room
with cats and dogs since birth. the animals raised her. the girl is just
like the animals. whenever the people who look after her now leave the
room she jumps against the door and growls or barks like a dog. that's a
sad sad story.

urgh, exactly. some people are just insane. if you'd have a baby and for
whatever reason you wanted to give it up, why couldn't you just leave it
in a church or better yet in a hospital.

or even better, just go to a doctor and explain that you can't take care
of your child or just don't want to. tell them that you're desperate and
are either going to give it up then and there or are going to leave it in
a hospital one day.

but how can anyone, even the most selfish of persons, think for even a
second that leaving a baby on the side of the road is a good idea?

I agree with everything you have stated...and I am not siding with these parents, but sadly sometimes people don't realize they have these options. That is why this is so sad. Ignorance could have cost this child's life. sad

It makes you wonder how many problems could be avoided if people could only overcome their fear, ignorance or pride and ask for help when they need it.

if some people don't do everything they could possibly do, including risking
their own life or health for their own baby, then i'm affraid there would be
no amount of schooling that could teach people to do the right thing and at
least see to it that their child ends up with someone responsible instead of
just putting it in a dumpster or at the side of the road.

i don't have children but i've held my friend's babies and i can't imagine
that when you hold your own child for the first time your instincts don't
kick in and turn you into a monster toward anything that might cause it to
hurt.

I wonder if some people do not have parental instincts?

Just the thought of a defenseless, hungry, ant bitten baby girl lying by the road makes me want to go out and bring her home with me.

exactly, same here. i guess that a very small percentage of people just don't
have that. or are indeed perhaps too scared or unknowing to know better.

but then still, a paternal instinct would/should stop you from doing some of
the horrible things some people do.

sigh

i'm gonna go watch some tv because thinking about this is really bringing me
down. poor kids.

What happened to the old fashion leave the baby on somebody's doorstep method? Once upon a time that was quite popular, sad, but at least is showed care. Some folks vein are definitely filled with ice water.

it's happened before someone who doesn't know they are pregnant gives birth, goes into shock, does inexplicable things. Like Moni said, very likely a teen mother, probably abused and downtrodden already. Drug addict perhaps?
Whatever happened, know that a NORMAL MOTHER does not do this, only a desperate one who has serious issues or is mentally challenged.

normally when they find abandoned babies, the news stories (at least in this country) always say authorities are concerned about the well-being of the mother.

I agree with you 100%! We have the same thing here in Ohio, where a parent can leave a baby at a hospital without being judged. It really is unnecessary and senseless for someone to leave a poor baby outside. Especially one that is that young! disbelief I really hope they find the person(s) who are/is responsible, and that the correct punishment is administered.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I wonder too, if there was not a teenage mom involved in this story. I could never leave my own flesh and blood on the side of the road like that, but maybe there are other factors involved? Dunno, but hopefully they will get to the bottom of this story.
