This topic belongs on the character-building thread wink

My dad used to make me keep a ledger book when he was paying for my studies. He didn't believe I should be spending any money at all on entertainment like movies or CDs or anything (thank god I didn't drink back then!) wacky so if I did buy something for myself, I'd have 69 cents to live on for 4-5 days confused if I complained I'd get the character-forming lecture.

also sometimes small markets like Trader Joes and local places will let you have older food that they are tossing out

or you could go 'freegan' and just pull it back out of the dumpster...It's usually wrapped

at the coffee shop I used to work at, each night we'd have to trash tons of sanwiches and pasries. We would try to get pastors and chruch workers to come get the stuff, but usually it just went in the garbge sad

perfectly good food! mad

in the states they aren't allowed to sell past the sell by are they? We have a "use by" date, isn't the same thing mad they can still sell that.

I got free chips at Toys R Us since he wasn't allowed to sell it and I asked if I could just have it then and he said "sure!" omg and there was NOTHING wrong with them nod

We used to to that when I worked at Toys R Us. Nothing wrong with the food, but we weren't allowed to sell it past the "expiry" date.

u have friends that work in food service? I waited tables and remember a VERY broke episode. I damn pooled all my change in my apron for the last 20 bucks to my deposit. But the cooks all loved me and HOOKED me up everyday with food.

Dollar store? I've spent 3 dollars and ate for three days on it.

Most of my friends in service these days work bars and clubs, but I could always see if I can score some olives or maraschino cherries. lol

I'm not normally one to steal, but I have been jacking food from work once in a while. Nothing big, just juice and the odd hotdog or nachos.

No cooks, huh? I had a chef neighbor that would always bring new stuff from his specials menu over.

You are so silly with the olives! wink Can't they sneak you a plate of wings? wink

I wish it was like that here. We have a chain of stores called "Sweet As" which sells discounted confectionary past it's USE BY date

Sorry I am so late to this conversation, I was just scanning "old" threads and came across this one. I also had to wonder why someone would say about the yummy salmon and smoothies they enjoyed! falloff I continued reading, too funny.

I hope you have more food in your tummy today! rose

That's the best idea. I was working at this company for about 7 years when I got hit by a car in the crosswalk. I was out of work for a while and I had two boys. I was out of food, money, and all hope. My co-workers rang my bell one day and came in with bags and bags of food for us. I was crying like a baby. bawl

I couldn't believe they did that for me. I did end up going to a food bank until I could get back to work. And I do go to second-day bread stores. I freeze the bread and it keeps for weeks. @ .35 or .45 per loaf, it's a good deal.

Also, I don't know if you have mystery shoppers in Canada, (probably do) but I worked as one for a long time. Not the fake ones you see in pop-up adds all over the Internet, but the real thing. You can request to do restaurants and fast-food places. The food is free and then they pay you to eat the food and report on the service. I can give you some links if you want and you can find out if they are located in Canada too. I worked for four different companies.

THe united states constitution states that a person cannot be procecuted for any amount of goods or service under 20.00.

that came in handy some days..not that i took full advantage, but i never felt guilty about sticking a fruit or donut in my purse especially on days i did have a little change.

That mystery shop thing would be great! I've actually been trying to figure out how to apply to be one for a legitimate company, but all I can seem to find are companies that want you to pay money up-front for the privilege of being their employee. Which ,oddly enough, strikes me as a touch shady. lol

hmmm I should look into whether that's applicable up here.

I totally stole a bag of apples today. I don't exactly feel proud of that, but the food bank doesn't give out fresh food and the notion of developing scurvy doesn't sound too appealing.

I did that for a friend of mine back in 2003. She was broke, food bank volunteers were not coming for 2 days to deliver. I was going to give her $75 so she could buy groceries (she has 3 kids) - Anyways I decided rather than give money I would go out and buy groceries. So off I went. Got hotdogs, meat, pasta, sauce, school snacks, bread, juice boxes etc. When I rang her doorbell and she saw what I had done she had tears in her eyes she was close to bawl I don't remember how much the bill was but I was not about to let her or her kids for that matter starve.

The roommates (they just keep moving in! lol )brought almonds and ice cream though, so you KNOW that's what I'm chowing down on as I type this.
