Years before I was born, she and my father were both homeless for a while and they would do things like if they couldn't scrounge up enough money to actually buy food. She said they never got caught, but I suspect store security is better these days. A relative of mine was going through some tough times (self brought on) and he stole food from the local market for over a year. He got caught 3 times, and each time was only "banned" and given a lecture, but then he went right back the next week Ya know, I know a lot of people just steal for shits n giggles, but I really believe the reason supermarkets tend to go easy on shoplifters is because they know some people are doing it out of desperation. SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said: emm said: the tundra?!? what?! That is a Canadian locale isn't it? See that map I posted? The tundra would be mostly above the word "Canada" and most of the population lives south of that. There are people living in the territories, but it's pretty sparse. Most of us are close enough to the border to spit on you. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

also sometimes small markets like Trader Joes and local places will let you have older food that they are tossing out
or you could go 'freegan' and just pull it back out of the dumpster...It's usually wrapped at the coffee shop I used to work at, each night we'd have to trash tons of sanwiches and pasries. We would try to get pastors and chruch workers to come get the stuff, but usually it just went in the garbge perfectly good food! If you will, so will I

There's a market nearby that every night at close sets out a basket of produce that's good enough to eat but not good enough to sell. I've made use of that a few times. [Edited 5/28/09 14:17pm] Vancouver! West Coast, baby. Just a few hours north of the 49th. I used to live in Kelowna, in the Okanagan Valley in the BC interior, but even that was only about 4 or 5 hours north of the border. COMPLETELY different climate from here though. SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said: emm said: the tundra?!? what?! That is a Canadian locale isn't it? it's in the high arctic countries where the ground is permanently frozen. the surface thaws but the ground below is frozen solid. it's kind of boggy in the summer (since the ground water can't soak in) and the vegetation that grows is low to the ground and sparse. erin would have the odd caribou and rabbit as her only neighbors up there on the tundra

don't know if anyone's suggested this yet
but check out local colleges and universities, i know Mohawk College here in Hamilton has food banks for students who really have a rough time financially, or just check out local food banks, they're free and though some of them limit how much you can take, it's still something i know the feeling, being at home, you'd think would be helpful but it isn't... down to my last dime m'self... Some of you have offered to help me out. Though I think I should be fine in a few weeks, I just want to let everyone know how grateful and thankful I am that you did. Though we interact online, most of you are as good as strangers to me. It's really touching that you would offer to extend help like that to someone you've never met.

Sometimes they give you shit loads of stuff Thought about it, but a lot of food banks tend to want proof that it's a consistent need, and really for me it's just this month. There are a lot of people in this city a lot worse off with me, and with food banks experiencing shortages of food and staff I wouldn't want to be taking food that someone who really needs it could be getting. Guess who hasn't been able to afford groceries for almost a month? I'm down to the last of the ramen noodles and canned soup, and I'm trying to stretch it out by only eating half at once. u have friends that work in food service? I waited tables and remember a VERY broke episode. I damn pooled all my change in my apron for the last 20 bucks to my deposit. But the cooks all loved me and HOOKED me up everyday with food. Dollar store? I've spent 3 dollars and ate for three days on it.

Most of my friends in service these days work bars and clubs, but I could always see if I can score some olives or maraschino cherries. I'm not normally one to steal, but I have been jacking food from work once in a while. Nothing big, just juice and the odd hotdog or nachos. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

We have a "use by" date, isn't the same thing they can still sell that.
