Don't they tatoo and pierce children in some other countriess at an early age, in some pretty barbaric methods too as a form of tribal identification. I think it's awful, but not uncommon. [Edited 5/27/09 11:05am]

I'm against ANYTHING people do to disfigure their child that that child may not have chosen for themselves when old enough to do so. Agreed!! Whole heartedly. I was the only girl in my school without pierced ears, I was kind of perversely pleased with being different. I chose to do it at the age of 35 - I am really happy I had the choice.

Is piercing a baby's ears abuse? Circumcision? Both are painful and permanent, just like a tattoo. I'm glad you have brought that up. I'm against ANYTHING people do to disfigure their child that that child may not have chosen for themselves when old enough to do so. so what a bout a toddler accidently faliing and breaking their front teeth and the parent insisting on getting cosmetic teeth as a replacement- this procedure needs anesthesia- is it necessary since they will eventually get their permenant teeth? LOVE HARD.

Fixing things that are broke? OK, I wouldn't do the teeth one unless it were necessary (like saving the space for the second set of teeth or something). I've known plenty of kids who have had no front teeth for a little while until their big ones grew. There are of course things like surgeries to fix facial issues - these have to be weighed up - trauma of procedure vs social/esteem issues arising from disfigurement or that it might get bigger if left untreated. What I'm saying is, if your kid is a perfect little being, let it be

this smacks of labeling one's property and that's disgusting. you're proud of your kid? jab your damn self with a needle and ink. wouldn't that be lovely if he gave his kid hepatitis from his home done tattoo?
not to mention the kid growing up and having to repeatedly explain to every girl that "daddy's boy" doesn't mean that

MrsGoodnight said: Circumcision isn't really the done thing in the UK, unless there are medical grounds. I don't have boys, but if I did there's no way I'd be cutting his foreskin off without good reason. If it wasn't meant to be there why would men have them at birth?! You don't cut off any other part of the anatomy, for the sake of it! Why the foreskin?!

I never really thought about ear piercing infants that way before...but it's true.
I only have 2 sons (both are the way they were born ) but if I had a daughter I would not pierce her ears as a baby...I'd want to let that be her decision and have it be a special event when (or if) she decided to do it. "not a fan" yeah...ok
